WILLARD MELBY Mrs. Willard Melby, 41, of Dunlap died early Tuesday following a 2-car crash in Dunlap Monday morning. Also injured in the accident were her son, Harold, high school junior, driver of the Melby car, and Roger Miller, high school senior, driver of the other car. Other members of the Melby family in the Melby car were not seriously injured. The accident happened shortly after 8:00 o'clock Monday morning at the intersection of 9th and Eagle streets. The Melby car, going north, came to rest in the yard of the Summerfield home, headed east. Mrs. Melby and her son Harold were both thrown out of the station wagon and were underneath the car when it stopped. The car had to be lifted off of them before they could be moved. The Miller car going west on Eagle street continued in that direction for several feet before it stopped. It was struck left side near the drivers seat. Neither car upset. The Dunlap emergency unit was called and the injured were brought to Dr. C. W. Byrnes office for treatment. Later the Melbys were taken to the Denison hospital where Mrs. Melby died about 4:00 o'clock Tuesday morning. Harold Melby suffered shoulder injuries and remained in the Hospital where his condition was considered good. Miller suffered head lacerations and other cuts and bruises. He was convalescing at his home Tuesday. Harrison County Sheriff Sam Strain investigated the accident, but filed no charges Monday. He said the cars were total wrecks. Funeral services for Mrs. Melby will be held Friday afternoon, Nov. 27, at St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. J. R. Behlendorf, pastor of the church officiating. The body was brought to the Barrett Funeral Home Tuesday where it will lie in state until the service. Besides her husband, immediate survivors include ten children: Roger, Harold, Connie, David, Karen, Royce, Wayne, Marsha, Diane and Richard, all at home. The following is copied from The Dunlap Reporter dated December 3, 1964: Funeral Services were held at St. John Lutheran Church, Friday, Nov. 27, 1964 for Mrs. Willard Melby, who died Tuesday morning, Nov. 24, of injuries sustained in a two car accident at a Dunlap intersection. The Rev. J. R. Behlendorf, pastor of the church, officiated at the service. Rowana Mae Melby, was born Nov. 10, 1923 at Earling, the daughter of William and Gladys TenEyck. She attended schools in Dunlap and Dow City, graduating from the Dow City High School. After working in Dunlap and Dow City, she was united in marriage to Willard E. Melby, Oct. 22, 1944 and to this union were born ten children. The couple spent their married life in the Dunlap area. She is survived by her husband, Willard, her ten children, Roger, Harold, Constance, David, Karen, Royce, Wayne, Marsha, Diane, and Richard, all at home, her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Ten Eyck of Dow City, seven brothers and three sisters, Dean, Billy, Darrell and Byron of Dow City, Keith and Delbert, who reside at St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. Leona Gordon of Dow City, Lyle and Mrs. Phyllis Ocander of Valley, Neb. and Mrs. Wilma Shumate. Also surviving are her grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Schafer of Logan, many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Melby was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church Women and the Faith Group. For the past two hears she was an advisor for the Junior Luther League and also a Bible School Teacher. Pallbearers were Russell Ten Eyck, Merlyn Ten Eyck, Bernard Andrews, Howard Andrews, Duane Melby, and Marvin Melby. Music for the service was provided by Mr. and Mrs. William Rannells and Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Jepson, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Mitchell at the organ. The Barrett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
