Blair, In Her 98th Year "Aunt Roxie" Ellerton, Creighton's oldest resident, died on Monday afternoon at the home of her niece, Mrs. M.C. Blair, just two and one fourth years short of living to the century mark. Roxey Laney Ellerton was born in West Providence, Canada on November 17, 1824 and died in Creighton, Nebr. on August 29, 1932 at the age of 97 years, 9 months and 12 days. She came with her parents to Chicago, Illinois, when only 7 years of age, when the present metropolis of the central states had only a few homes and business buildings and as a young woman, she saw this great city begin its development. She was united in marriage in 1870 to George Ellerton, who had served in the Fifth company, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and had received his honorable discharge. Her path was soon blighted by sorrow, for after a brief 8 years of companionship together, her home life was crushed by the untimely death of her husband. In 1892, with her mother, she moved to Vang, North Dakota, where they took homesteads, bravely facing the hardships that made life so real in those pioneer days. They worked hard and had little to see for their labors, but by their efforts, these pioneers gave the middle west the advantages we now enjoy. "Aunt Roxie" took care of her mother through her declining years and then, when her own sister died, she gathered the nine children left under her own roof and raised them to be honest citizens. She was always a devout Christian, practicing the giving of her life in the service of her Master and enjoyed the reading of her Bible until advanced age made it impossible. She enjoyed to visit and tell of the experiences that gave her faith and endurance. She was always a church member, affiliating with whatever church was in the community and while in Creighton she was a member of the Baptist church. For the past twenty-four years she has made her home with her niece, Mrs. M.C. Blair and has had the best of care and comfort. She was very active for her years, until the past four months, when she became bedfast, peacefully answering the final summons from life's battlefield with a full life well spent, while the world has witnessed the following events in history. From News, Nov. 19, 1931... "Aunt Roxie" was nearly two years old at the time of the Alamo massacre, March 6, 1836, the outstanding date in Texas war of independence. She was nearly two before a steamship was launched on the Pacific Ocean. She was nine when the first telegraph line was put up between Washington and Baltimore. War with Mexico began when she was twelve. She was fifteen the year of the California gold rush. Two years later the New York Central railroad was opened. She was 31 when the Civil War ended, 1865, the same year in which Lincoln was assassinated. She was 42 when the telephone was invented. Since the invention of the telephone, thousands of other inventions and changes have made their appearance. Truly, no 97 years in the history of the world have been as changing and progressive as the 97 years of "Aunt Roxie's' life... Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning at the Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by the Rev. William E.
