He was born February 4, 1906, on the family farm in the Liberty community southwest of Lyons to William and Rosa (Long) Ayer. He was born February 4, 1906, on the family farm in the Liberty community southwest of Lyons to William and Rosa (Long) Ayer. He was baptized at Liberty United Methodist Church and attended Fairview School. September 2, 1933 Evalyn Darling became his wife at the Presbyterian manse in Lyons. He farmed the family farm with his brother until 1937 and on his own until moving to the Bertha area in 1948. He was a member of the Divide Center Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. The coupled moved into Lyons in 1957. Ayer joined the First United Presbyterian Church of Lyons and served as deacon and several Synod and Presbytery offices. He was a member of the Mariners and served as its skipper many times. Besides farming, he served as caretaker of Lyons Cemetery from 1965 until 1975 and was custodian for the Lyons Public School for several years. Preceding him in death were a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Donna Ayer; son-in-law, Darl Beck; parents; brothers, Elmer, Edward, William, and Frank; and sisters, Lillie Johnson, Sadie Cohoe, Della Lofgren, and Lottie Gilster. Survivors include: his wife; children, Junavae Beck of Tekamah, Judith Anthony of Ralston, Richard and Nancy Ayer of Omaha and Margaret and Larry Curtis of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, Myrtle Hall of Oakland; sister-in-law, Hazel Ayer of Belden; nieces and nephews. Rev. Kirk Erwin officiated. Robert Widener was organist. Richard Nelsen sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "In the Garden," and Alan Hall sang "Amazing Grace." Casket bearers were Clinton G. Carr, Douglas Anderson, Norman Kassmeier, Carl T. Anderson, Lee Roy Petersen, David Friedli, F. J. "Butch" Forsberg, and Ed Vetick. Honorary bearers were Jon Heideman, Jerome Anderson, John W. Frey, Leland E. Going, Albert Shepard, and Delbert Nielsen. Another honorary group was the Lyons Presbyterian Mariners. Burial was at Lyons Cemetery.
