"Bud" Watson, 87, of Madison Drive, Glenmoor, died at 6:52 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at the home of his daughter in Washington, Pa. Born Aug. 31, 1921, in LaCroft, a son of the late Olive and Roy B. Watson, Sr., he was a lifetime area resident. He was a conductor and yardmaster in the transportation department at the former Crucible Steel Co. for 33 years. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served in the Pacific Theater as a Staff Sgt. in the 1st Marine Division during World War II and later served with the 2nd Marine Division in the Korean War. He attended East Liverpool City schools and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. A pugilist from 1934 to 1944, he also was a licensed pilot. One of the front doors of the East Liverpool Alumni Clock Tower building was named in his honor upon the project's completion, as he was very involved in many aspects of the organization from its beginning. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June E. Pelley Watson, on Jan. 4, 1984. Also preceding him was a sister, Marvella Moore; a brother, Robert Watson; and two grandchildren, Michelle Hartzell and Eric Hartzell. He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Hartzell and her husband, Neil, of Washington, Pa. There is a granddaughter, Teri Amos and her husband, "L.R.", of Claysville, Pa., and a great-grandson, Austin Amos. Also surviving are two sisters, June Jones of Florida, and JoAnn Smith, and her husband Carl, of East Liverpool; and two brothers, Richard "Spikes" Watson, and his wife Sue, of East Liverpool, and Michael Watson of Maryland. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The Rev. Eric Edwards will conduct a funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial is to be in Spring Grove Cemetery where the Tri-State Burial Group will conduct full military honors.
