Read More	OBITUARY The Greenville News (SC) - Saturday, February 8, 2003, Page 5B LIBERTY, SC - Mr. Roy Benjamin Summey Sr., 87, of 578 Five Forks Road, son of the late George Stephens and Elma Brewer Summey, died Thursday at Hospice House in Anderson. He was born in the Simms Mill community of Pickens County, and served his country in World War II in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps, entering as a private. While in a heavy battle on Guam he received a field commission to second lieutenant, and returning stateside in 1945, he attended officer training school at Camp Pendleton, California, and was commissioned first lieutenant at Quantico, Virginia. He resigned from the Marine Corps with the rank of captain. Mr. Summey participated in battles at Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Samoa, Guam, Iwo Jima and numerous small engagements. Mr. Summey was a member of Calumet Baptist Church for many years, serving as deacon, Sunday school teacher, RA boys leader and church clerk. He served on many church committees. Mr. Summey retired from Woodside Mills of Liberty in 1980 as master mechanic and shop foreman. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Frances Patterson Summey, of the home; two daughters, their special child, Nancy Hope Summey, of residential home No. 1, in Easley, and Cathy (Summey) Roper Holbrooks of Liberty; two sons, Roy Benjamin Summey Jr. (Ben) of Liberty, and John Bradford Summey, and his wife, Tina, of Liberty; a brother, William Louie Summey, of Greenwood; a sister, Mrs. Marvin (Margie) Snyder, of Easley; six grandchildren, Leigh Hedden of Clemson and Lissa and Nathan Roper and Daniel, Sonya and Derek Summey, all of Liberty; and four great-grandsons, Dakota Stewart, Gunner Hedden, Kieran Roper and Asa McKinnon Stewart. Mr. Summey was predeceased by a brother, Rufus Sheriff, and two sister, Mrs. Della S. Masters and Mrs. Vera S. Greene. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 9, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Calumet Baptist Church, by the Rev. Jack Mahaffey, the Rev. Willie Honea and the Rev. Carl Jordan. Burial will be at Westview Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the Liberty Mortuary. Active pallbearers will be Butch Andrews, Fred and Jerry Owens, Larry Joe Watson, Stan and David Snyder, Stephen Summey and Michael Sheriff. Honorary escort will be Billy Dorsey, Johnny and Patrick Watson, Pete Owens, Craig Bramlette, Wayne and Larry Summey, Curt Landrum, Frederick Jones, Bill, Tommy and Roger King, Paul Morgan, David Burns, the Rev. Paul Hayes, Jerry Black and John Holcombe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calumet Baptist Church Debt Fund, 400 South Peachtree Street, Liberty, SC 29657. The family is at the home.
