Description	:	The funeral for Roy L. Morkert, 88, of Leeds was held Mon. at 2 p.m. at the Leeds Lutheran Church. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died after a long illness July 21, 1999 at the home of his son in Ludington, Mich. Rev. Betty J. Stedman officiated. Pallbearers were Erling Axness, Curtis Jorgenson, Gary Krantz, G.D. Roy Levi Morkert was born July 28, 1910 on the farm of his grandfather, Henry Morkert, in York Township of Benson County to Solomon & Nettie Christianson Morkert. His family moved to Foley, Alabama in 1911 & returned to a farm in Beaver Township near York. He attended grade school in Beaver Township & graduated from BCATS in Maddock in 1928. He attended college at Fargo & Minot & earned an elementary teaching certificate in 1929. He taught in several country schools, including schools in Beaver Township of Benson County & Coulee Township of Ramsey County. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933 & 1934 at Lost Corner, Ark. & Hill City, SD. He married Gunvor Groff June 13, 1936 in Leeds. They lived on farms in Benson County until moving to Leeds in 1946. From 1947 to 1948 he managed a grain elevator in Leeds. He began working for the US Soil Conservation Service in 1948 & worked at offices in Carrington, Towner, Cando & Leeds before retiring in 1975. During his employment he planted thousands of trees in creating shelter belts for area farms. After retiring he worked several summers at Krantz's Floral & Garden Center in Devils Lake. He was baptized & confirmed at the Leeds Lutheran Church & was a lifelong member. He was a member of Heim Lodge, Sons of Norway of Devils Lake, the National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees & a former member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed working in his yard & traveling. Survivors include his wife of Leeds; a daughter & son-in-law, Marlene & Robert Freudenwald of Caledonia, Wisc.; a son & daughter-in-law, Sidney & Margaret Morkert of Ludington, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; & 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marcella E. Sherwin; an infant brother, Harry F. Morkert; & a son, Kenneth LeRoy Morkert.
