He was born in Ballantine, Mont. on May 18, 1927, and married Clarice Storer on June 16, 1946, in Columbus, Mont. Together, they celebrated 61 wonderful years raising their children and farming on the Huntley Project. They also enjoyed snow-birding in Arizona and traveling to several places, with special memories made in Alaska and the Panama Canal. Roy loved people, farming, and his community. Many years were spent as an active member of the Huntley United Methodist Church, Yellowstone Conservation District Supervisor, ASCS Committee member, Western Sugar Growers Director, Huntley Eagles 4-H Leader and Huntley Project FFA supporter. He was interested in the projects of the Conservation District, especially work on the Yellowstone River and the Christmas tree recycling. He was always proud that his three children graduated from college and that they continued his passion for people, farming and community service. Roy touched many people his family, neighbors, friends and strangers - with his generous heart, quick smile and helping hand. His life was a true reflection of his character, faith, courage, love, perseverance and hard work. Roy is survived by his wife Clarice; his children Leroy (Sydney) and their children Greg (Ellen) and Annie, Kathe and her son Kevin, and Jack (Lissa) and their children Eddie and Steffanie; his sisters Dorothy Shinazy, Violet Eckhardt (Bob), Margie Herman, Annabelle Schreiner (Reynold), and Alvina Jansma and his brothers Alvin (Marylou), Henry (Elnor), Gerald (Orlena) and Larry (Beverly) and their children. He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Mabel Gabel; his sister Esther Buerkle and brothers Harold and Coney. Viewing is available from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the funeral service starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Smith's Funeral Downtown Chapel at 925 South 27th Street, Billings. Interment will be at the Huntley Cemetery immediately after the funeral service. Memorials may be made in Roy's name to the Huntley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 184, Huntley, MT 59037, the Billings Deaconess Oncology Research Center, Billings, MT or the charity or organization of choice.
