"Bill" Lichtenberger, age 75 of Callaway, died Sunday Dec. 4, 2016, at his home at Callaway. Funeral services for Roy W. Roy William "Bill" Lichtenberger was born Feb. 23, 1941, to Roy W. and Alma Vincent Lichtenberger at the Carothers Hospital in Broken Bow. He joined four older sisters, Betty, Mary Jane, Gladys and Shirley. Bill attended all 13 years at the Callaway School graduating in 1959. After graduation he attended the University of Nebraska and Kearney State College before joining the Navy. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving from 1963 - 1967 on a Destroyer and Submarine. After his discharge he returned home to the family farm/ranch to work with his father. He was married three times, first to Sharol Osborn then to Margie Hunt who brought two children to the marriage whom Bill adopted. He married his present wife, Charldene "Dee" Weinman Dakan in 2001. Bill worked for the Custer County Department of Roads for almost three decades besides farming and ranching before retiring and moving to Callaway. He then became County Supervisor for District 6, a position he held just shy of eight years. Bill enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, a third Degree Knights of Columbus, a 50 year Charter Member of the Seven Valleys Rodeo Association, and was on the Board of the Seven Valleys Historical Society. He belonged to Bryson Booker American Legion Post 59, Callaway Lions Club, Elks Club, Parion Lodge 207 AM & FM Callaway, Custer Lodge 148 AM & FM Broken Bow, , Arrow Chapter 164 OES, was a 33 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Mason, was a member of the Loup Valleys Shine Club, and Tehama Shrine, Hastings. Bill was a Deputy Grand Custodian for the Grand Lodge of Nebraska and served as Potentate for the Tehama Shrine in 2011. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, George; a sister, Mary Jane Brestel; and four brothers-in-law. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Charldene; children, Debbie Schaaf of Grand Island, and Troy (wife Lee) Lichtenberger of Huntsville, Ala.; step-sons, Michael (wife Eileen) Dakan, and Monte (wife Pamela) Dakan of Kearney; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Sergun of Arnold, Gladys Spangler of Callaway and Shirley Pierce of Oconto; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
