Dodge, 28, and Carrie B. Wilson, 18, daughter of Samuel and Eliza Dodge Wilson, were married in Wakefield, Massachusetts, by clergyman Charles R. Bliss. Royal Frank Dodge enlisted as a Private with Company G, 20th Regiment, Maine Infantry, on 29 August 1862 at the age of 22. He was with Sherman on his "March to the Sea". He became ill and was hospitalized at Antietum. He was in the 20th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, Co. B., and was wounded at Fredericksburg, VA. He owned the Ted Clark farm now owned by Norman and Barbara Simpson. Royal raised vegetables and trucked them to Caribou during the summer. He was very very fragile and had heart problems from the war. He died at age 54. He was active in the Odd Fellows Lodge.
