Ruben Mehlhoff was born August 04, 1921, to John J. and Lydia (Bender) Mehlhoff at Eureka. He was raised on the family homestead three miles east and one mile north of Hillsview. He was baptized and confirmed in the Reformed Church. He attended Stickel #4 grade school, completing the eighth grade. During the World War II conflict, he was inducted in the United States Army on September 12, 1942. He received his basic training in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was in a medical detachment of the Air Force. He worked as an orderly in Kearns, Utah, Amarillo, Texas, and Lincoln, Nebraska, Air Force hospitals. He was transferred to Paris, Texas, where he received infantry training and was sent overseas to serve in the Europeon Theater of Operations until his discharge on January 12, 1946. He then resumed farming on his father's farm. He married Jacqueline Doris Harr on July 11, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. Along with small grain farming, he had the distinction of raising the first purebred Charolais cattle herd in McPherson County. In 1973, he was honored as a GSDA conservation county winner. They moved to Eureka where he was an adjuster for Rain and Hail Crop Insurance. He entered the EHCC on February 01,1994. He was a member of the Eureka Reformed Church, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in which he had been a past All-State Commander. He enjoyed hunting pheasant and duck and also playing cards. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include his wife of Eureka; one daughter; two sons; three sisters, Lenora Schick of Eureka, Arlene (Arnold) Herrboldt of Hosmer, and Addie Dorsey of Tahoe City, California; four grandchildren; and one step granddaughter.
