Ruby Irene Meyer, 89 years of age, of Wilcox, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege, Nebraska. Ruby was born February 7, 1926, at her parents’ home in Franklin County, Nebraska, near Macon, Nebraska the only child born to Frank and Tillie (Harms) Jelken. She was baptized on February 28, 1926 by Pastor C. Weber. Ruby attended Zion Lutheran Church, west of Macon and was confirmed on May 11, 1941. She received her education from District 67 Lake View Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Hildreth High School with the class of 1946. She then attended Normal Training School in Kearney, Nebraska. On April 11, 1948, Ruby was united in marriage to Arthur L.W. Meyer at the Zion Lutheran Church in Campbell. The couple made their home there until moving to a farm west of Wilcox, Nebraska in 1949. To this union three daughters were born: Connie Jean, Mary Jean Faye and Carol Jean Kaye. From 1974 through 1979, she was employed at Artistic Woven Labels in Holdrege and Bethphage Mission at Axtell. When her husband’s health started failing, she chose to stay home and take care of him and her aging mother. Her husband passed away on September 7, 1998. When her health began to fail, she moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to live with her daughter, Mary Jean for four years. In 2015, she moved to Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wilcox, a past member of the Ruth Society, which is now, LWML, You Go I Go Club, and the Wilcox American Legion Auxiliary # 377 for many years. Besides her parents, and husband, Art, Ruby was preceded in death by her daughter, Connie Jean in infancy; step-father, John Jelken; brother-in-law, Frankie Jelken; and step-brothers-in-law: Lowell Herrick, Earl Kinney, Don Lodge. Ruby leaves to celebrate her life: daughters: Mary Jean Jones and her husband, Steve of Lincoln, Nebraska, Carol Jean Harms and her husband, Mike of Wilcox; six grandchildren: Bradley Metzger and his wife, Melissa of San Antonio, Texas, Melissa Metzger of Holdrege, Jacob Harms and his wife, Stephanie of Hildreth, Sarah Placke and her husband, Anthony of St. Libory, Nebraska, Anna Francis and her husband, John of Beatrice, Nebraska, and Matthew Harms of Wilcox; two great-grandchildren: Elijah and Olivia Placke; step-sisters: Louisa Kinney, Elverna Herrick and Irene Lodge; step-sister-in-law: Norma Jean Jelken; sister-in-law, Neva (Meyer) Parks; and many other close relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Friday, October 16, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. -7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Wilcox. Expressions of caring and kindness can be sent the family at www.nelsonbauerfh.com A memorial has been established in Ruby’s honor and will be designated at a later date. The Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Wilcox is in charge of the arrangements.
