Ruby Louise Farwell, daughter of George Hugh and Ethel Marguerite (Howrey) Racine, was born on March 4, 1925 at her grandmother's house in Coin, Iowa. She passed away on Monday, Oct. 3, 2005 at Garden View Care Center at the age of 80. Raised south of Shenandoah on the family farm, Ruby attended public school in Shenandoah. She graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1942. Following graduation, Ruby attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school three years at Lone Rock School in Page County and three years in Sidney, teaching fifth grade. On May 28, 1949, Ruby was united in marriage to Jack D. Farwell. Following their marriage they farmed near Hamburg until moving to a farm west of Essex in 1960. In 1977, Jack and Ruby converted a portion of their farmland into the Essex Golf Course. In 1993, they moved into Shenandoah. Ruby was a member of the Essex Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and received Honorary Life Membership of the Presbyterian Women. She was also active in the Church Circle. Ruby loved baking and cooking. She was known in Shenandoah as the "Pie Woman", since winning the pie baking contest in the Shenandoah Septemberfest. Preceding Ruby in death were her parents and her husband, Jack, in Aug. of 2004. She is survived by her son, Mike Farwell of Villisca, two daughters, Carol Franks and her husband Danny of Essex, and Jackie Johnson of Phoenix, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Memorial services were held on Thurs., Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. the Essex Presbyterian Church. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Rick Sleyster. Organist was Margaret Woods. Dean Adkins sang "He Touched Me" and "It Is No Secret", accompanied by Kris Adkins. Attending the register book were Vivian Walker and Arlene Tackett. Caring for the flowers were Virginia Frank, Marcene Johnson, Patty Johnson and Eleanor Sligar. Ushers were Glenn Confer and George Ross. Inturnment was in the Essex Cemetery. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.hackettlivingstonfuneralhome.com on the web.
