Description	:	Ruby Mae Smith Bjorndal (Mae), 89, passed away on September 30, 2004. Mae was born May 17, 1915, at the family home on Huntley Creek near Columbus to George and Agnes James Smith. She grew up and attended school at the Huntley Creek School. Mae was the "Mom" to her younger brothers and sisters. Mae was born May 17, 1915, at the family home on Huntley Creek near Columbus to George and Agnes James Smith. She grew up and attended school at the Huntley Creek School. Mae was the "Mom" to her younger brothers and sisters. She often helped out in the families with new babies, taking care of the children and cooking. Mae was working as a cook on the Parker Ranch near Absarokee when she met Bjarne, who also worked there. Bjarne and Mae were married October 3, 1938 in Billings. They lived near Absaroka until 1946 when they moved to their ranch on Ten Mile Creek north of Big Timber. They lived there until retiring to Big Timber in 1975 on the former George Lavold place on the banks of the Boulder River. Mae was well known for her cooking, gardening and flowers. She truly had the proverbial green thumb. Mae was happiest when cooking, caring for children and having friends and family visiting. She looked forward to summer when she could garden, tend her flower beds and have the kids - first she and Bjarne's younger brothers and sisters, then the nieces and nephews, the neighbor kids and then all the grandkids came for the summer, bringing with them their friends. Her children were blessed that they had a mother who opened her heart and home, not only to them, but also to many, many other young people who became part of their extended family. After retiring, Bjarne and Mae traveled the western United States visiting friends and family. They made several trips to Norway where they visited Bjarne's aunts, uncles, and cousins. Mae was treated like royalty when she celebrated her birthday, May 17, Norwegian Independence Day, in Norway. After Bjarne's death Mae made her home with son Dave and his wife, Sherry, of Big Timber. She entered the Pioneer Home in June of 1995. Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Bjarne, her son, George, and her parents, three sisters and three brothers. Mae is survived by two sisters, Maxine Lindgren of Missoula, and Lucy Abrahamson of Seattle, Washington; her son, David and his wife, Sherry of Big Timber; her daughter, Linda and husband Walt of Orpheim; grandchildren Curtis and Stacy Bjorndal and children of Columbus, Mitzi and Scott Robbie and sons of Park City, Melissa and Jeff Gavne and children of Livingston, Joy and David Watson and daughter of Glasgow, Bob Lewis of Craig, Colorado, Joanne and Frantz Noel and daughter of Urbana, Illinois; and extended family members Frankie Olson and her daughters Peggy and Hank Trenk and family of Helena and Paula and Dan Fields and family of Big Timber. A celebration of Mae's life was held on Tuesday, October 5 at the Congregational Church in Big Timber. Son: David Henry Bjorndal
