Read More	Mrs. Ruby Farrand passed peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, June 23, 2016. Services will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 2pm, at First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Ruby Nell Carstensen was born on May 24, 1931 to Charles and Rose Carstensen of Newell, Iowa. As a child, she experienced both life on a farm and in small town America. Their home in Newell was across the street from the school. Mom had great memories from there: especially of times when her cousin Janice would spend the night. They were like sisters and spent a lot of time giggling. As so often happens in small schools, Ruby was involved in many things and first nurtured her lifelong love for music while in school. She played piano, was in Glee Club & Choir, Band, and was on year book staff. She learned the skills of knitting and sewing from her mother. Her first experience with basketball was playing at school in Newell. Little did she know how much basketball would invade her adult life. After high school graduation, she worked in a local bank for a year and then followed her brother Ken Carstensen to South Dakota and attended Sioux Falls College. There, she met Floyd Farrand. They had a short courtship; were married, and enjoyed 62 years of faithful, supportive marriage while raising their four children in Sioux Falls. While she never earned her college degree, her kids now say, "our mom earned her 'PHT' (Put Husband Through) while Dad earned his teaching degree. Mom was our Home Maker...two words: Home Maker. She sewed and knitted for us. And she cooked & baked. We had our favorites....and...our not-so-favorites. Favorite: awesome chili from recipe in Nancy's Betty Crocker Kids cookbook. Not-so-favorite: Tuna Noodle Hot dish...white sauce, a can of peas, a can of tuna and egg noodles. Favorite: the best goulash ever....not Hungarian...it was mom's...The Best. Sunday dinner was often roast beef with potatoes & carrots and Mom's home-made rye bread. Honestly, we had more favorites than not-so-favorites. If Dad was gone for supper, we got to eat something that he didn't like: mac-n-cheese with breadcrumb topping toasted in the oven or maybe fried Spam & cornbread with syrup. And, she always had a treat for us: chocolate chip cookies; snickerdoodles; buttermilk brownies (by the way, she frosted them with chocolate frosting!); banana bars; chocolate cake.....yum. Even today, mom always had a cookie in the house....somewhere. We found her personal stash! Ruby and Floyd were a true team and worked together on many endeavors. When Dad was a basketball coach, mom would be in the stands (with children in tow) cheering on the team. When Dad had a tough loss, she was there with her support and also rejoiced with the big wins! Later, they worked diligently together at Cactus Heights Golf Course. That was their summer project for many years. She enjoyed traveling with Dad to Athletic Director Conventions; and then for many winters to the Orlando, Florida area. Spending January & February in Florida was just fine with her. They spent their entire marriage as members of First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls. Mom demonstrated her understanding of hospitality by working in the kitchen for different events; her understanding of service by playing piano for Sunday School classes; her support of missions with involvement in White Cross and, recently, with Prayer Shawl Ministry. Ruby loved American Baptist Women. She attended the meetings locally and especially loved going to Camp Judson for Women's Conference with her lifetime friends...Pat Peterson, Anna Olson, Amy Barber, Chris Carstensen, and many others. As kids growing up at First Baptist...we have great memories of our mom working side by side with those friends in the old fellowship hall kitchen...serving lunches and dinners for weddings, funerals and church socials...feeding teens after BYF meetings. She didn't just tell us about Christian Service...she lived it. As kids, we remember mom working to knit bandages for White Cross projects. Recently, Ruby continued her Christian service by helping sort supplies on Church Service Day. She also was a current member of the Prayer Shawl Group. She enjoyed knitting washcloths for toiletry bags that went to the women's prison, as well as helping with snowman caps for a Christmas workshop project. She also used her stitching and knitting skills to make things for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren...they brought her such joy. She loved their visits and their written notes & cards. She loved following their activities: choir and band concerts, soccer games, plays, ball games, hunting excursions, volleyball, and many rounds of golf. Dad had a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. When he was in the nursing home, she made 2 or 3 trips a day to be with him and assist with his care. After he passed, she grieved, but we were pleased that she took steps get out more and get involved again. Basketball remained in her life too. There was always a game of some kind on TV. She enjoyed the birds & flowers in her yard....and missed the cardinals from our old house. She always planted red geraniums and loved snapdragons, zinnias, gladiolus, and tulips. She worked her green-thumb magic with African Violets that she started from one leaf. On Sunday afternoons, she tuned in at 4 pm to listen to the National Christian Choir on the radio. She loved choral music....especially if it involved a grandchild. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Floyd Farrand; her parents, Charles and Rose Carstensen; and her brother, Ken Carstensen. She is survived by her four children: Nancy Alton, Albuquerque, NM; Jean (Scott) Lastine, Edina, MN; Doug (Karelyn) Farrand, Aberdeen, SD; and Sharon (Steve) Syrdal, Fargo, ND; 7 Grandchildren: Kjirstin (Chris) Phillips; Nathan Alton; Kendra Syrdal; Andrew Farrand; Ashley Farrand; Peter Lastine; and Stuart Farrand; 3 Great-Grandchildren: Daniel, Joey, and Annalysa Phillips; and her sister-in-law, Chris Carstensen.
