Floyd was born November 3, 1930 in Superior, Nebraska. He grew up in Superior and was active in high school athletic & music activities, and graduated in 1948. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education & Social Studies from Sioux Falls College (USF) in 1952. He began his post graduate studies at the University of Nebraska, and completed his Masters of Science Degree (1963) at South Dakota State University (Brookings). While attending Sioux Falls College, he met Ruby Carstensen. They were united in marriage September 11, 1951. In 1952, Floyd taught & coached at Chester (SD) High School. His 35-year career with the Sioux Falls Public Schools began in 1956 as an elementary P.E. teacher. He went on to teach P.E. and coach at Patrick Henry Jr. High. In 1965, he became the first head basketball coach & taught Social Studies. He coached the Boys Basketball State Champion Runners-Up (1968) and State Champions (1970). He was coordinator for Milwaukee Bucks Basketball summer camps at SDSU in the mid-1970s. In 1976, he stepped down as head basketball coach to become the first Athletic Director for Lincoln Sr. High School while also coaching girls golf. He lived out his passion for golf while managing Cactus Heights Golf Course until 1991. During retirement, he served as Caddy Master at Minnehaha Country Club. He was a long-standing member of First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, where he served as Sunday School teacher & camp counselor at Camp Judson in the Black Hills. He also served on the Board of Christian Education, Board of Deacons, and was involved in other lay ministries. Through the years, Floyd was active in professional organizations and other activities including SF Education Association; SD High School Athletic Directors Association; Sioux Interstate Conference; SD Education Association; Howard Wood Dakota Relays; SD High School Coaches Association; and others. He was active with Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Athletic-related honors include: Lincoln High School Hall of Fame (2002); YMCA Tri-State Hall of Fame (1980); SDIAAA Athletic Director of the Year (1979-80); & Athletic Director of the Year (1980). Floyd is survived by Ruby, his loving wife of 61 years; a sister, Vivian (Farrand) Thompson, (Pinellas Park, FL); a sister-in-law, Wanda Farrand (Harvard, NE); four children, Nancy Alton (Albuquerque, NM); Jean (Scott) Lastine (Edina, MN); Doug (Karelyn) Farrand (Aberdeen, SD); and Sharon (Steve) Syrdal (Fargo, ND); seven grandchildren: Kjirstin (Chris) Phillips; Nathan Alton; Peter Lastine; Andrew, Ashley, & Stuart Farrand; and Kendra Syrdal; and three great-grandchildren: Daniel, Joey & Anna Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence "Ray" & Zoe Farrand; brothers: Henry & Clarence; and sister, Blanche. The family thanks the staff of Covington Heights Golden Living Center & AseraCare Hospice for caring for Floyd. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Thursday at First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation begins at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Wednesday evening at Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Fellowship of Christian Athletes or Baptist Camp Judson (Keystone, SD). Published in The Argus Leader on Apr. 30, 2013
