Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of the arrangements. He was born Nov. 15, 1913, on the family farm in Kearney County near Holstein to John and Anna Marie (Koinzan) Faber. On June 7, 1942, he married Lenore Steiner of Heartwell. Survivors include his wife of 71 years; daughter-in-law, Dana Faber of Minden; grandson, James Faber and his significant other, Becky Owens, of Heartwell; granddaughter, Allison Jones and her husband, Aaron, of Ogallala; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Rudy was the youngest of nine siblings. Rudy attended West Point School District 41 for three years, and then he went to St. Paul's Lutheran Christian Day School in Holstein. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Holstein. Rudy lived most of his life in south-central Nebraska and farmed the majority of his life. From 1936 to 1939, he drove a fuel transport truck from Enid, Okla., and Kansas City, Kan., to the Champion stations in Nebraska. From 1939 until 1940, he worked in Brawley, Calif., on electrical substations. He returned to Nebraska and resumed transporting fuel. On Feb. 11, 1942, Uncle Sam said, "I want you." Rudy was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Forces, and took his basic training at Sheppard Field, Texas. He was sent to Syracuse, N.Y. He and Lenore were married at the Lutheran church in Syracuse. They lived in Syracuse and Hempstead, N.Y. On Oct. 7, 1942, Rudy was shipped overseas to China. He arrived there on Dec. 1, 1942, and was there until Jan. 26, 1945. While in China, he was a "special vehicle operator" and refueled planes that flew the "Hump." He was awarded the Bronze Star due to a method he developed of rapidly and accurately refueling planes. He was stationed in Nashville, Tenn., until Oct. 17, 1945, when he received his honorable discharge at Lincoln Army Air Field. From 1945 to 1947, he worked as a mechanic in Kenesaw. In 1947, Rudy and Lenore purchased a farm two miles east of Heartwell. He farmed, drove a school bus for the Heartwell School and built a well-drilling rig with a partner. They drilled approximately 100 wells for neighbors, relatives and friends during the 1950s. In 2006, they moved from the farm to Minden. In May 2013, he moved to Bethany Home. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Adolph, Emil, John and Victor; sisters, Emma Jensen, Elsie Hohlfeld, Ella Schroeder and Golda Steiner; son, Allen Faber; and an infant grandson.
