Description	:	Rufus Clifford Childs was the son of William Albert Childs and Henrietta Houser, both of whom were born in Indiana. He was born on November 1, 1877 in California. In 1880, the U.S. Census records Rufus under the name of "Clifford" at the age of two, living with his parents and siblings at Red Bluff in Tehama Co, CA. In 1880, the U.S. Census records Rufus under the name of "Clifford" at the age of two, living with his parents and siblings at Red Bluff in Tehama Co, CA. His older sister Agnes was five years old and had been born in Kansas. He also had a brother named Hancock who was not yet one year of age. By 1900, he was still using the name 'Clifford'. He was 22 at the time of the census that year, and the head of his household at Sierra Township in Tehama Co, CA. He descibed his occupation as a 'wood hauler' although he also says that he had been unemployed for 2 months at that time. He rented his home, and could read, write, and speak English. He married Iva Maud Johnson on the first day of June in 1913 at Live Oak in Sutter County, CA. His age is listed as 35, and hers as 29 at the time of their marriage. He declares himself to be a widower who was married once before. He lists his place of residence at that time as Anderson in Shasta County, CA, and his occupation as that of a barber. In 1916, his wife Iva Maud (Johnson) Childs gave birth to their daughter Georgia Ellen Childs at Live Oak, Sutter Co, CA. On the birth certificate for Georgia Ellen, her mother Iva declares that she has given birth to three children, all of whom were living at that time. Rufus claims his occupation to be that of a farmer. A WWI Draft Registration from 1918, records that Rufus was living at Live Oak, Sutter Co, CA and working as a self-employed farmer. His wife at that time is listed as "Ivy M. Childs". He is described in that document as having a medium build, medium height, blue eyes, and gray hair. The U.S. Census of 1920 finds Rufus, his wife Iva, and five children residing at Butte, Sutter Co, CA. The eldest child in the home, Etsy B. Childs, was 9 years old at the time, and was probably the daughter of his first wife. Aside from Etsy B. (9), there was also Dorathy (5), Arthur (4), Georgie E. (3), and Etta J. (1). By 1930, Rufus C. Childs was 52 and still living at Butte in Sutter Co, CA with his wife Iva and his five children. At the time of the U.S. Census of 1940, Rufus was 63, Iva was 56, and two of their children, Arthur B. (24) and Etta J. (21) were still living with them at their home in Butte Twsp, Sutter Co, CA. He was working sixty hours a week, fifty-two weeks a year as a barber at a barbershop. He also reveals in this document that his highest education level achieved was the sixth grade. His son Arthur was attending school and Etta J. worked as a secretary at the public school. During the Second World War, in 1942, Rufus C. Childs Registered for the Draft at the age of 64. He lists his place of birth on that document as Butte County, CA. He lists his address as Four Corners, Sutter Co, CA. This document reveals that he was self-employed as a barber at that time. The California Death Index records that Rufus C. Childs passed away on June 2, 1963 at Yuba, CA. It also records that his mother's maiden name was 'Houser'. The known children of Rufus Clifford Childs: -Esty B. -Dorothy A. -Arthur Burton Childs -Georgia Ellen Green* -Etta Jane Field *Georgia Ellen Childs, the daughter of Rufus Childs, DID NOT marry Walter Carl Litzsinger.
