The sad death of Rupert Kowalewski, a prominent Polish farmer residing about six miles south west of Ashton occurred about 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Kowalewski was cutting grain and was riding on the binder at the time the bolt of lightning struck him. His two children were shocking grain near by and when the lightning struck they noticed that their father had been struck and they rushed up to him and found him dead. From all indications death was instantaneous as his head and shoulders were badly burned as was [sic] his clothes. The way it was reported to the Times, Mr. Kowalewski was apparently looking at his watch when the bolt struck him as he had his watch in his hand. The reins were over one shoulder and around his neck while driving and these kept him from falling backward and in this position he was found. His pipe was in his mouth when found. Doctors were summoned and neighbors rushed to the scene and he was taken to his home, but death was undoubtedly instantaneous. Four horses were hitched to the binder and one of them was also instantly killed and another was knocked down but recovered. Deceased leaves to mourn his death his loving wife, two children, one daughter May about 14 and his son Albert about 10 years of age. His mother, Mrs. Mary Badura of Elba. Six brothers, Felix of Ashton, Arthur, Frank, Stanley, and Cash of Loup City and Floyd of Chicago. Two sisters, Mrs. Clara Callwin [sic] of Red Elm, South Dakota and Mrs. Verna Watkins of Omaha. His father passed away about four years ago and four of his children have preceded him in death. Funeral services were held from the Catholic Church at Ashton Thursday morning. Mr. Kowalewski was about forty-two years of age and was born in Sherman County and has been a resident of the county all his life. He bore an excellent reputation as a good citizen and neighbor and was highly respected by everybody that knew him. His death is untimely, coming as it did without any warning and his loved ones have the sympathy of the entire community. The Sherman County Times - Jul 20 1928
