ROGERS, 56, of Rochester, died at 1:38 p.m. Wednesday in the Woodlawn Hospital emergency room, Rochester. Born in Gary, he was the son of Don and Marilyn Garvison. They preceded him in death. A 1969 graduate of Rochester High School, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He served from 1969 to 1973. On July 24, 1971, he married Sherry Evans at First Christian Church, Rochester. He worked as an oiler and mechanic for E & B Paving, Rochester. He belonged to Local No. 150 Operator-Engineers. He was passionate about sporting activities and enjoyed motorcycling, umpiring Rochester girls softball, coaching youth bowling and ice fishing on the sparkling waters of Nyona Lake and Lake Manitou. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, a past director of the Indiana Snowmobilers Association and president of the Salamonie Trailmaster Snowmobile Club. A fan of Richard Petty and NASCAR racing, he enjoyed racing go-carts at Akron Speedway. He was also a certified SCUBA diver. Survivors include his wife, Sherry Rogers, Rochester; a brother, Doug Garvison and wife Sue, Rochester; a sister, Rose Brady and husband Bob, Weaver, Ala.; his father-in-law, Robert Evans, Rochester; and a sister-in-law, Chris Swango and husband Steve, Virginia Beach, Va. A celebration of the life of Russell A. Rogers will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with Pastor Scott Seay officiating. Burial will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be conducted by LeRoy Shelton American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home. Russell's family requests memorials be made to Hope Hospice or the Fulton County Cancer Fund in lieu of flowers.
