It is recalled that he was the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. representative from Akron at the presentation of the Army-Navy "E" award made to Firestone Textiles, Inc. On March 27, 1944. Russel Allen Firestone, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey S. Firestone, was born in Akron, Ohio, December 3, 1901. He attended Asheville school, Asheville, and completed his preparatory school education at Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N. H. He was active in athletics at school, particularly in football, and was a member of the Phillips Exeter golf team. At Princeton University, where he was graduated in the class of 1924, he was a member of the cast of one of the Triangle Club shows which toured the United States. Following his graduation, Mr. Firestone joined the staff of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, first taking the Firestone training course with a group of other college graduates. In the years since, he was closely associated with the expansions in the operations of the company. In 1927, as representative of the company, he broke the ground for the new Firestone plant at Los Angeles, Calif., and in 1932, he became general manager of the company's newly created mechanical rubber goods division at Akron, a position which he held until 1939. He was elected a director of the company in 1932 and has served in that capacity since. After the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Firestone, in 1942, was chosen general manager of the Nebraska Defense Corporation, a Firestone subsidiary, and supervised construction and initial operation of the corporation's bomb loading plant near Omaha. He returned to Akron in 1943 after being elected assistant treasurer of the parent company. He was a vice president of the Firestone bank and was elected a director in 1930. In 1944 and 1945, Mr. Firestone was a vice-president of the National Victory Garden Institute and in 1946 was elected a vice-president of the peacetime version of the organization, the National Garden Institute. For three successive years during the war -- 1943 - 1945 -- the Firestone Company received the institute's highest award for its "distinguished record in encouraging victory gardens and home food preservation" and in 1946 and earned similar recognition. Mr. Firestone had served as senior warden of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron and was very active in church work. Long identified with the Firestone Farm Activities Program, Mr. Firestone has taken an active interest in National 4-H Club work, the Future Farmers of America and many other youth movements. He was a breeder of thoroughbred horses and a director of the Metropolitan Jockey Club, the Hialeah Park racecourse and the Saratoga association. He married Dorothea Lee Bryan of Fort Worth, Texas, May 9, 1925. They had two sons, Russell Jr., born July 29, 1925 and David Morgan, born October 23, 1930. Russell Jr., now is living in Dallas, Texas, and Morgen is a student at Princeton University. Funeral services for Mr. Firestone were held today at 2 p.m. at Harbel Manor, Akron.
