Description	:	Russell Drewry Cherry, Sr., 90, of 3927 Cloverwood Meadow Lane in High Point, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Adams Farm Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro, following a long illness. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, August 30, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Danview Cemetery in the Draper area of Eden. Mr. Cherry was born May 30, 1918 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the son of Louella Drewry and Orman E. Cherry of Eden. He attended the University of North Carolina and in the latter part of his senior year enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While serving during World War II, Mr. Cherry survived a plane crash during pilot training. He later served as an airplance instrument specialist. His British troop transport ship, the Rohna, was sunk by the Germans on its way to service in the China / Burma / India theatre. Mr. Cherry was one of a small number of survivors, spending seven hours, with only a life jacket in the stormy Mediterranean Sea. He was rescued by a ship from South Africa. After a time in a South African hospital, he continued his service in the Air Force for two and one-half years, being stationed near the Taj Mahal where he spent the rest of his World War II service. Upon military discharge, Mr. Cherry was employed, in management, at Fieldcrest Mills for 36 years and retired at 64 years of age. He was very active in Eden, formerly the Draper area, in many sports, including tennis and golf and was a member of the Lions Club and the Jaycee's. He also participated in many community activities. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Draper. Russell had a wonderful sense of humor, a generous spirit, and was a loving husband, father, and friend. Due to serious illnesses, in 2004, the Cherry's moved to High Point to be nearer their sons. Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Lucile Turner Cherry, formerly of Eden; two sons, Russell Drewry Cherry, Jr. of Greensboro and Robert Edward Cherry and wife, Mary Ann of High Point; and two grandchildren, Russell Edward and Lindley Elizabeth Cherry.
