Description	:	OVERBROOK Russell E. Israel, resident of Overbrook, KS, formerly of Topeka, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at age 94 while residing at Brookside Retirement Community shortly after suffering a stroke. He was born at home in Overbrook, KS, the son of J.W. and Myrtle Atchison Israel. After completing an elementary education, he went to work on the family farm. Israel, resident of Overbrook, KS, formerly of Topeka, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at age 94 while residing at Brookside Retirement Community shortly after suffering a stroke. He was born at home in Overbrook, KS, the son of J.W. and Myrtle Atchison Israel. After completing an elementary education, he went to work on the family farm. During this time, with his own team of mules, he and his father helped build Hwy 56 and Lone Star Lake in Eastern Kansas. In his early 20s he also joined the CCC, journeying to Wyoming where he again was a teamster with mules, assisting with wintering over herds of elk. Later on, he returned to Overbrook where he managed a full-scale cattle feeding and farming operation. In 1954, he married Esther Trendel Tolle and to that union a daughter was born. He and his wife, son and daughter moved to Alma, KS for a short time where he ran a feed yard. After their divorce, he moved to Topeka and as a heavy equipment operator worked on the construction of I-70. In 1961 he married Marcine Bloom Gaston, and they remained married for 46 years until her death in 2007. Always recognized as an accomplished heavy equipment operator and a superb horseman, he completed his last working years with the Menninger Foundation in Topeka. He was a member of the construction and maintenance crew on the West Campus, as well as riding companion of Dr. Karl Menninger and wrangler of the Menninger Schools herd of ponies that were kept for the children to ride. He was featured in a Life Magazine article along with Dr. Karl in the early 60s. It was not unusual to see him driving a dapple gray team of Welsh ponies pulling a red wagon east on 6th Street to Menningers East Campus to provide rides for patients on Sunday afternoons. In 1981, after retiring from Menningers with 20 years of service, he spent most of his time on the back of a good horse, riding with his daughter Terri and son Dave, or assisting Dr. Bob Domer with his large animal veterinary practice in Topeka. He especially remembered with great fondness, trips with the Domers to their in-laws in New Mexico where he relished the gathering, branding and sorting of cattle and long days in the saddle. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marcine, his son Larry Gaston, his brothers Charles and Dean and his sisters Eula (aka Billie) Tarr and Florene Adamson. Left to mourn his passing are his sister Leah Miller, son David E. Tolle (Karen), grandson Jeff Tolle (Jocelyn) and great-grandchildren Jared, Jessica and Jeremy, daughter Terri Israel Barlow (Lawson) and granddaughter Heather Barlow Spicer (Jerry), great-grandchildren Kody Kalb, Kristopher, Clayton, Hannah Grace and Alex Carson and Jacob Spicer, dear family friend of the last 3 years, Kathy Jones and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Special thanks to the staff of Brookside Retirement Community for their loving care of Russell. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to Grace Hospice or Cal Farleys Boys Ranch, sent in care of Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home, Box 268, Overbrook, KS 66524.
