Russell James Darrow was born December 13, 1927, in Jones County, near Anamosa, the son of James and Elizabeth (Hannan) Darrow. He grew up during the Great Depression. He attended Morley Schools and graduated as valedictorian in his graduating class. He learned the value of hard work and making do with what they had. At a young age he learned to sing while working with his father on the family farm. Singing was a gift he loved and blessed others with his entire life. He loved farming, however his father died when he was 17 years old and the family farm was then sold. He then worked for other area farmers and also some factory work in Cedar Rapids. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids and studied forestry for a short time. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1950 and served his country on board the USS Kenneth Whiting during the Korean War and was honorable discharge in 1954. He married Ruth Lowe in 1957 and became the father of her daughter, Debra. They lived in Cedar Rapids before making their home in Mechanicsville. Russell and Ruth had two daughters of their own, Laura and Valerie. Russell and Ruth were later divorced. He was employed with Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids as a lathe operator, holding a supervisor position, until his retirement. He then was employed as a pumper in the natural gas fields operated by AMCO in Wyoming, until retiring. He moved to Dubois, Wyoming, where he worked for two newspapers, the Frontier Weekly and the Casper Star. In 2013, he moved back to Iowa to be closer to his family. Russell did many things in his life including being a Boy Scouts leader, playing and watching baseball and singing at church, weddings and funerals. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, camping, cutting wood, gardening and photography. He was an avid reader and his books were among his prized possessions. He is survived by three daughters, Debra Nerbonne of Cedar Rapids, Laura (Warren) Wethington of Tipton and Valerie (John) Randolph of Muscatine; seven grandchildren, Heather Woodard, Rebecca Cole, Jeffrey Woodard, James Woodard, Quincy Fuller, Bethany Wethington and Nicole Wethington; one great-grandchild, Paris Fuller; and may other family relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mable Cuneo and Esther Moehl and one brother, Richard Darrow.
