Description	:	Russell M. Hansen was born Feb. 4, 1924 in Jerauld County to Gerloff and Mattie (Parmely, Dwyer) Hansen. He attended grade school in Beadle County, and graduated from Sand Creek Consolidated school in 1942. Sixty-nine years ago, Russell married the love of his life Leona (Teveldal) on December 7, 1944. He attended grade school in Beadle County, and graduated from Sand Creek Consolidated school in 1942. Sixty-nine years ago, Russell married the love of his life Leona (Teveldal) on December 7, 1944. He ranched and farmed with his father and brother Robert until he was drafted into the Navy in May of 1945. After boot camp, his orders sent him to Guam, where he worked in the laundry. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After returning from Guam, he formed a farming partnership with his brother Robert. Russell and Leona started a family and were blessed with three children: Arla, Larry & Judy. Besides raising kids and farming, he kept busy playing baseball. In his later years, he was an umpire who was jokingly called “Bad Call Hansen”. He was also busy serving his community as a church council member and as an Alpena Oil Cooperative board member for 27 years. He was a proud member of the Owen-Kunze American Legion Post # 0116 in Alpena for over sixty years. Russell and his brother continued working together until retirement in 1985. Sitting idle in retirement was not for Dad. Farming was his life, but repairing equipment was not. He found he could continue farming by working for others and calling for help when things broke down. In 1994, Russell and Leona left the farm and moved to Wessington Springs, South Dakota. While in Wessington Springs, they enjoyed their community by attending the local church and school events, golfing and playing cards any time or anywhere they could. In 2012 they sold their home and moved to Trail Ridge Retirement Community in Sioux Falls. Many changes occurred but he still had his Minnesota Twins and looked forward to the start of every season and rarely missed a game on TV. He accepted the city life, but he dearly missed his family and friends in the Alpena and Wessington Springs area. Throughout his life, whether on the farm, in the Springs or Sioux Falls, his home was open to family and friends. He is survived by his wife Leona, son-in-law Howard Brenneman of Hartford, South Dakota, son Larry Russell Hansen (Roxann) of Boise, Idaho, daughter Judy Ann (Lynn) Goodell of Kearney, Nebraska, Nine grandchildren: Laurie, Brian, Mark Brenneman, Preston Hansen, Miranda (Hansen) McDannel, Alana Hansen) Bruner, Joshua, Jamisen, and Jacobi Goodell. Nine great Grandchildren: Jonah, Cecilia, Charlie, Parker, Cooper, Leila, Kyler, Brooklyn, & Samuel. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Arla Brenneman, brother Robert, sister Beverly Krueger, three half brothers, Donald, Burl, Kenneth Dwyer, half-sister Alice Rogers.
