Leona Idella Teveldal was born on October 31, 1924, in Beadle County, SD to Peter and Ida (Pederson) Teveldal. She attended rural school in Beadle County and graduated from Alpena high school in 1943. Leona was baptized and confirmed at the rural Earville Lutheran church; she later became a member of Our Savior's Lutheran church in Wessington Springs, SD. On December 7, 1944, Leona married her handsome beau, Russell Hansen, and became a loving and devoted farmer's wife. In 1945, the war took Russell to the Navy and eventually to Guam. Leona then worked at a Huron bakery where she developed her magic touch for baking amazing cookies, cakes and breads. With Russell back home in 1946, they settled into farming and raising a family. First came Arla, followed by Larry and Judy. Leona was devoted to her family, kept a very tidy house, cared for her garden and helped with fieldwork by running the windrower and bucking hay. Leona once commented that field work was kind of fun because it kept her off her feet and because there weren't any fences, she could not run into anything. In her home she could be found baking, canning, cleaning, sewing or crocheting afghans. She kept busy driving kids to school activities and was a great hostess who cooked many meals for family and friends. Her recipe for grilled chicken was truly finger licking good and enjoyed by many. Throughout the years she was active in her church, the American Legion Auxiliary and her neighborhood social club. When the kids were gone, she worked one week a year at the Lutheran dining hall during the SD State Fair. She started as a dishwasher, but was promoted to head gravy cook and she was definitely the right person for that job!! After moving to Wessington Springs in 1994, Leona was busy attending church and local school events, golfing, quilting and playing cards whenever she could. With family miles from home, her vacations were often trips to see the kids and grandkids in Nebraska, Idaho and the Sioux Falls area. Everyone looked forward to her visits because she was sure to arrive with containers of homemade cookies and bars. After open heart surgery in 2011, she and Russell moved to the Trailridge Retirement community in Sioux Falls. Although life was quieter, she came to enjoy having meals prepared for her. Evenings were spent watching Minnesota twins baseball, "Everybody loves Raymond" on TV and playing cards when visitors came. When Russell passed in 2014, Leona joined a social group and played cards and games every night for four years. In April 2018, Leona moved to Bethany Home in Brandon, South Dakota. She remained there until her passing on July 20. Her sweet smile, her quiet and gentle nature, and her kindness endeared her to all who knew her or cared for her. She is survived by son Larry Russell Hansen (Roxann) of Boise, Idaho, daughter Judy Ann (Lynn) Goodell of Kearney, Nebraska; nine grandchildren: Laurie, Brian, Mark Brenneman, Preston, Miranda Hansen, Alana (Hansen) Brunner, Joshua, Jamisen, Jacobi Goodell; ten great grandchildren: Jonah, Cecelia, Charlie, Idella, Parker, Cooper, Leila, Samuel, Willa, and Kyler, and siblings Delores Schaffer, Olaf and Ivan Teveldal, and sister-in-law Luella Teveldal. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Arla Brennamen, son-in-law Howard Brenneman, brothers Lloyd (Aggie) Teveldal, Leonard Teveldal, sisters Pearl (Dick) Krog, Edna (Harold) Brandenburg, Verna (Leo) Koerner, and Lila (Max) Kludt, and brother-in-law Allen Schaffer, and sister-in-laws Glenda & Liz Teveldal, and two nephews, one niece and one great nephew. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tim Andersen # 47680689 provided links to parents. ~ 9-18-2019
