Description	:	Ruth Bamford Wheeler Cary, 97, of Sterling, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in Sterling of natural causes. Visitation will be until 7 p.m. today, Jan. 7, at Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Faith United Methodist Church with Rev. David Burnett officiating. Burial will be at Fleming Cemetery following the services. Mrs. Cary was born Feb. 29, 1904, to Robert and Alma (Nelson) Bamford in Fleming. She graduated from Logan County High School in 1924, after an elementary education in various schools in the Fleming, Dailey, and Haxtun area. After meeting the necessary requirements, she received a preparatory teaching certificate and taught the next four years in Proctor District 50 and at Pumpkin Vine School north west of Haxtun. On June 12, 1926, she married Bunnie Wheeler. She returned to teaching in 1942, and taught at White Hill School south of Fleming for one year and then Dailey School for 10 years, the last four years as principal and third grade teacher. After earning her bachelor's degree in education from Colorado State College of Education (now University of Northern Colorado), in 1953, she continued teaching in the Fleming and Sterling areas until her retirement in 1968. She continued as a substitute teacher for the next 11 years, for a total of 41 years in the Logan County school system. Her husband, Bunnie. died in 1978. She married Gordon Cary in 1980. He died in 1985. Mrs. Cary is survived by four children, Betty Haynes and late husband Harold of Haxtun, Doris Dion and husband Dean of Lake Ozark, Mo., Marian Meitz and husband Kenneth of Houston, and Roy Wheeler and wife Toni of Sterling; one sister, Opal Rosenbach of Aurora; one brother-in-law, Frederick Pronger of Sterling; two sisters-in-law, Alice Bamford of Haxtun and Lois Bamford of Denver; several cousins and many nieces and nephews; special friends, Sam Karg and Esther Ahnstedt; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bunnie and Gordon; three brothers; five sisters; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sterling Heritage Center.
