Petersen, 90, a longtime North Central Washington educator, died Monday evening, Nov. 20, 2000 in the Cornerstone Care Center at Waterville. She was born July 15, 1910 to pioneer Alstown settlers, Thomas S. and Myrtle (Weedin) Hedges. She attended the Slack School, Waterville High School and graduated from Central Washington College. She started her career as a teacher at Orillia and then at Happy Home in Douglas County. Ruth married Harold M. Petersen at Olympia on Oct. 17, 1936. After raising her three children, she returned to teaching grade school at Waterville in 1955. She taught there until retirement. In 1988, Ruth and Harold moved to the Colonial Vista Retirement Home in Wenatchee. After the death of her husband in 1992, she was often seen helping the patients at the Care Center with their meals. She was a member of the Waterville Federated Church and the Ladies group there, and a longtime member of the Washington State Grange. Survivors include a son, Thomas of Waterville; two daughters, Metta Ann Petersen of Tacoma and Mary Beth Elliott of Beaverton, OR; a sister, Beth Morse of Seattle; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her parents and a brother. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, Nov. 25, 2000 in the Waterville Federated Church. Pastor Thom Gosser will officiate. If desired, memorials may be made to the Waterville Ambulance Fund. Arrangements are by the Waterville Funeral Home. From: Wenatchee Daily World November 22, 2000
