THOMAS SLACK HEDGES With his appointment as State Tax Commissioner in 1933, Thomas Slack Hedges assumed the responsibilities of public office in a field to which he has long devoted careful study. He is a recognized expert on taxation and has been for many years a prominent figure among the wheat farmers of the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Hedges was born at Little Current, Ontario, Canada, November 24, 1879, son of Henry S. and Emily (Slack) Hedges, the former a native of England and the latter of the Dominion. Henry S. Hedges came to Canada about 1870, when he was sixteen years old, and became a successful farmer in the Little Current section. In 1889, in the period when Washington was admitted to the Union, the Hedges family removed from Canada to Waterville, Douglas County, Washington, where the father continued his career as a farmer. Thomas S. Hedges, who had attended the elementary school of his birthplace in Canada for a short time, now completed his education in the public school of his new home at Waterville. During earlier years he worked on his father's farm there until, as a young man, he became a farmer in his own right. His efforts prospered, and thereafter until 1932, when he was appointed a member of the Washington State Tax Commission, he continued as a successful farmer and active figure in the affairs of the wheat farmers of the Northwest. Mr. Hedges was a director for twenty years of the Waterville Union Grain Company. He was also a director of the old North Pacific Grain Growers organization and has served as a director of the present body of the same name, until he took public office. In connection with his work as a farmer, he has been a close student of the farmers' tax problems, and when Governor Martin sought an expert on rural taxation to sit on the State Tax Commission, Mr. Hedges' qualifications led to his appointment. He took office for a six-year term on January 16, 1933, and by the fidelity and value of his services has fully justified the wisdom of his choice. In addition to his other connections and responsibilities, Mr. Hedges served for two years as president of the Waterville Chamber of Commerce, and for twenty-six years was a member of the Waterville and Douglas County School boards. He was also a director of the Waterville Savings Bank over a long period and held the office as State Overseer for the Washington State Grange, until his present appointment. He worships in the Methodist faith and has been a trustee of that church at Waterville for the past fourteen years. On June 28, 1904, Thomas Slack Hedges married Myrtle Anna Weedin, who was born in Seattle, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Brownfield) Weedin. They are the parents of the following three children: I. Elizabeth, born at Waterville, July I, 1906, married Roy Morse, son of W. C. Morse, former Seattle city engineer and himself an engineer practicing in Seattle. They are the parents of one daughter, Alice, born in March 1932. 2. Robert, born at Waterville, October 8, 1907, now managing his father's farm in that community. 3. Ruth, born July 15, 1909, a teacher in the public schools at Orillia.
