She was born in Ellensburg on Nov. 15, 1905, a daughter of Arthur J. and Ruth (Ford) Damman, who were both members of pioneer families. Her first home was the house her parents built, the “Driver House,” which now houses the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce and Ellensburg Rodeo Office. Ruth’s early life was spent in Vancouver, B.C., where her parents moved in 1912. She attended Washington State College in Pullman, graduating as a pharmacist in 1927. She later specialized in laboratory, ex-ray and physical therapy, receiving training in Louisville, Ky., and graduating in 1933. During the 1930s, she worked in clinics in western Washington, ending up at the University of California Davis campus at the beginning of World War II. She enlisted in the women’s Army Auxiliary Corps which later was incorporated into the U.S. Army, becoming a WAC. Upon discharge after three years of service, she returned to Ellensburg to live with her father, Arthur J. Damman, DVM, and her aunt, Miss Ruth Ford, residing in the home built by her maternal grandmother, Mrs. David Ford. Ruth was active in the community in a multitude of ways. She was a member of the AAUW, American Legion Auxiliary, Clymer Museum of Art, Kittitas Genealogical Society and a charter member of the Kittitas County Historical Society. She maintained the Kittitas County Museum for 15 years, assisted with girls’ state on the Central Washington University campus, Red Cross blood drives and Girl Scouts. She was active in organizations of Easter Seals and the March of Dimes and also volunteered at the Ellensburg Public Library. Many people will remember Ruth faithfully serving the county elections until the age of 95. She was preceded in death by all her family members. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at the Kittitas County Museum with details to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
