On August 19, 1916, Ruth was born to Edith (Evans) and Lorin Harrison Doughty. Her birthplace was Ames, IA, but she spent her childhood in Norfolk, NE. In 1938, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and banking from Colorado College. In 1939, she married Louis Anton Bitters at Shove Chapel on the Colorado College campus. Theirs was a 56 year marriage. During the WWII years they lived in Minneapolis, MN, Davenport, IA, and Omaha, NE, before settling in 1945 in one of the original stone houses in Leawood, KS. Ruth called Leawood home for the next 53 years, and was a keeper of the early history of the city of Leawood. She moved to Bishop Spencer Place in 1998. Ruth's professional experience included three years in banking at Southgate State Bank in Prairie Village and 18 years as administrative secretary at Country Club Congregational Church in Brookside. Her volunteer involvement included Delta Gamma sorority where she was a 70 year member and Kansas City Young Matrons and their children's theatre troupe. Other memberships included Indian Hills Country Club and the 50/50 Class at Country Club Christian Church. Her parents and her husband predeceased her. Survivors include her son David L. Bitters, Ph.D., and daughterin-law Daphne Bitters, Mission Hills; granddaughter Blair Doughty Bitters, New York City; sisters Mildred Boyer, Lincoln, NE, and Mary Carlisle, Norfolk, NE; and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her unselfish devotion to her family and friends, her keen intelligence and her passionate interest in painting and needlework. (Arr. D.W.
