Description	:	Funeral services for Ruth E. Brekke, age 83, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 22, 2010, in Grace Lutheran Church, Watertown. Rev. Stephen Lauricella will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma, organist, and Judy Everson, soloist. Ruth passed away on Monday, October 18, 2010, at her son’s residence. She was the widow of Maurice Brekke. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery, rural Hayti, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Ruth’s great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be: Daniel Brekke, Eddie Brekke, Duane Everding, David Everding, James Anderson, and Lynn Anderson. Visitation will be on Thursday at Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, from 4 to 7 p.m. and in the church on Friday prior to the services. The family is requested to meet at the church on Friday by 9:30 a.m. for a prayer service. Ruth was born on Sept 8, 1927, in Hamlin County, SD, to Oscar and Thora (Anderson) Syren. She attended and graduated from Hayti High School. After graduation she worked at the Watertown Public Opinion. She then moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where she worked at Sioux Valley Hospital as a switchboard operator. On September 11, 1947, Ruth married Maurice Brekke in Hayti, SD. The couple moved to Watertown and Ruth later worked as a waitress at the Drake Motor Inn. She also worked in housekeeping at Memorial Hospital and then worked several years at Dakota Poultry. They moved to Wisconsin for eight years and then moved back to Watertown; where she began volunteering for the Banquet at church. Maurice passed away on May 5, 2008. Ruth continued to live in Watertown. Ruth was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, crocheting, walking, playing cards, and board games. She is survived by four sons: Ron (Ramona) Brekke, Dale (Patricia) Brekke, and Neil (Kathy) Brekke all of Watertown, SD, and Wayne Brekke of Elk City, OK; two daughters: Phyllis (Harlan) Nelson of Spokane, WA, and Mary (William) Everding of Brookings, SD; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren: two brothers: Aldrich Syren and Roy (Martha) Syren all of Anchorage, AK; and one sister-in-law, Claris Syren, of Anchorage, AK. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; two brothers; and one grandson, Brent Nelson.
