Maurice was born on April 21, 1922 in Hamlin County, SD to Edward and Mary (Stormo) Brekke. He graduated from Watertown High School. Maurice entered the U.S. Army in 1942 serving in Signal Corp. In 1946, Maurice was honorably discharged. He married Ruth Syren on September 11, 1947 in Hayti, SD. Maurice started working for the U.S. Post Office in 1947. Brekke, age 86, of Watertown, SD passed away on May 5, 2008 at a hospital in Watertown, SD. Maurice was born on April 21, 1922 in Hamlin County, SD to Edward and Mary (Stormo) Brekke. He graduated from Watertown High School. Maurice entered the U.S. Army in 1942 serving in Signal Corp. In 1946, Maurice was honorably discharged. He married Ruth Syren on September 11, 1947 in Hayti, SD. Maurice started working for the U.S. Post Office in 1947. He retired in 1977 and the couple continued to live in Watertown. Maurice was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the American Legion, and V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and working on handyman projects. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Watertown, SD; four sons: Ronald and his wife, Ramona Brekke, Dale and his wife, Patricia Brekke, Neil and his wife, Kathy Brekke, all of Watertown, SD, and Wayne Brekke and special friend, Gayle, of Elk City, OK; two daughters: Phyllis and her husband, Harlan Nelson, of Spokane, WA and Mary and her husband, William Everding, of Brookings, SD; one sister-in-law, Viola Brekke, of Watertown, SD; nineteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and one grandson, Brent Nelson. Funeral services will be Friday, May 9, 2008 in the Grace Lutheran Church, Watertown, SD. Burial, with military graveside rites provided by Cook-Olsen Post #217- Hayti, will be in New Hope Cemetery, rural Hayti, SD. Active pallbearers will be: Lowell Poor, Steve Lindner, Dennis Lindner, Darrell Brekke, Daniel Brekke, and Samuel Billings. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, SD.
