Description	:	ALTON, Iowa -- Mrs. Ruth Fennema, 86, of Alton died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Bickford Cottage in Sioux City. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Alton Reformed Church, with the Rev. C. Orville Kool officiating. Burial will be prior to the service in Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. A family prayer service will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Alton Reformed Church, with the Rev. C. Orville Kool officiating. Burial will be prior to the service in Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. A family prayer service will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home. Ruth was born Oct. 19, 1916, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Stronks) Jansen. She graduated from Alton High School in 1934. She married John E. Fennema on May 9, 1936. Ruth was a lifetime member of Alton Reformed Church, where she was active all of her life, directing Sunday school music and the church choir. She was a member of the adult choir and participated in duets, trios and was a soloist, piano teacher, accompanist and an organist for 71 years. She was active in the women's organization and of service to retirement and nursing homes. Ruth enjoyed entertaining, traveling and attending musical events. She was especially well-known for sending numerous letters to her friends and family. She was employed for 12 years as site manager for the Area Agency Dinner Date program and served as president of the Sioux County Council on Aging. She also worked as a cook at Heritage House and Pioneer Home in Orange City. Left to cherish her memory are a son and his wife, Robert and Lila Fennema of Sioux City; three daughters, Marianne and Charles Foster of Omaha, Jean Peterson of Sioux City, and Virginia and Horace Wells of Hawthorne, Fla.; four grandchildren, Eric Foster of Portland, Ore., Bradley and Katrina Foster of Omaha, David and Ingrid Peterson of Brookfield, Wis., and Jan and Tom Lisle of Dallas, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Lisle of Dallas, and twins, Carson and Ethan Foster of Omaha; a sister, Margaret Lubbers of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Beth Jansen of Alton; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1975; her parents, Henry and Anna Jansen; a brother, James Jansen; a sister, Esther Scholten and her husband, Lawrence Scholten; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Fennema; and a son-in-law, John B. Peterson. Pallbearers will be Charles Foster, Eric Foster, Greg Jansen, Kevin Jansen, Paul Lubbers, Phil Lubbers, Jim Moen and Horace Wells. Memorials in her name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland, 224 Fourth St., Sioux City, IA 51101.
