Graveside services for Mrs. Brooks were held Tuesday at the Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma. Rev. David Rogula, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church officiated. Ruth Elizabeth Brooks was born July 14, 1921 to Francis and Daisy Dee Johnston near Montezuma, IA. She was raised near rural Montezuma and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1939. After graduation Ruth attended Iowa City Business College and was employed by the University of Iowa Statistical Services. Ruth was married to Philip Brooks April 25, 1944. During WWII, while her husband was overseas, Ruth was employed as an executive secretary in Washington, DC. After the war, Ruth and Phil made their home in Newton, Iowa, being employed by Maytag for the next twenty years, with Ruth as an executive secretary. Ruth & Phil moved to Brooklyn 1965 and owned and operated the Standard Oil Station from 1965 to 1975 when they retired. Ruth was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing golf, playing cards, and most of all being with her family. Survivors include one sister and her husband, Francine and Valere Lavent, Brooklyn; one nephew, Douglas Lavent and wife Linda of Montezuma; two nieces, Debra Lavent and Valerie Blain and family, Arlington, Texas; three great nieces and three great nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
