Read More	Ruth Skidmore Dec. 6, 1914-Nov. 12, 2010 Ruth Skidmore, 95, 1729 Wabash Ave., Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 12:57 p.m. Friday at her residence. She was born in Rochester on Dec. 6, 1914, to Roy and Minnie Pletcher and a lifetime resident of Rochester. Ruth graduated from Rochester High School with the Class of 1932. Fulfilling a dream to become a teacher she attended Ball State University and earned her teacher's certificate. Miss Pletcher taught school for Rochester Township at the Burton School from 1934 to 1938. Henry "Hank" Clay Skidmore and Ruth Pletcher solemnized their wedding vows in Rochester with the Rev. Ross Shannon presiding Aug. 21, 1938. Their marriage of nearly 50 years produced two sons, Tom and Steve. Later four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren were added to the family tree. Returning to the classroom in 1955 Mrs. Skidmore taught third grade for Rochester at Columbia Elementary School until her retirement in 1975. During these years in addition to her classroom students, she welcomed a number of aspiring young teachers for student teaching assignments into her classroom to learn strategies of classroom management, methods of instruction and modeling the fine qualities of being a great teacher. Whether it was mathematics, spelling or penmanship, Mrs. Skidmore was always on the cutting edge. A community member who was never without energy or enthusiasm always graciously gave back. Ruth was a member of the Fulton County Retired Teachers Association and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Fulton County RSVP, and Woodlawn Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered at the gift shop for 18 years. As a loyal and devoted member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Ruth truly embraced her church family by assisting in many capacities throughout her lifetime. She was baptized at Grace as a baby, holding membership for 95 years as one of the oldest members. A member of the Morning Quest Circle, she also served the United Methodist Women as past president. More recently, she looked forward to meeting with friends and discussing the Bible in John Howkinson's Messenger/Lend-A-Hand Sunday school class. Traveling abroad, Ruth enjoyed her visits to England, the Scandinavian counties and a memorable cruise to Alaska. To relax, Ruth, a seasoned competitor, enjoyed the challenges of bridge and pinochle. Hosting her lady friends for an afternoon at the round table was always a tremendous delight. Ruth was a fond lover of chocolate. As the matriarch of the Skidmore clan, Ruth truly loved and adored her sons and their families. There was nothing better than getting together for family celebrations, holidays, and enjoying dinner and sharing good times. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry on Feb. 28, 1988, and a grandson Patrick Skidmore. Ruth is lovingly remembered by two sons, Tom Skidmore and wife Sally, Indianapolis, and Steve Skidmore and wife Susan, Rochester; four grandchildren, Christopher Skidmore, Indianapolis, Anne Brown, Indianapolis, Kacie Skidmore, Gilbert, Ariz., Emily Skidmore, Rochester; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Brown, Thomas Brown, Andrew Skidmore, and Grayson Skidmore, all of Indianapolis; and sister-in-law Louise Skidmore Vernon, Rochester. A celebration of the life of Mrs. Ruth Skidmore will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Maurice Grindle officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Ruth will be laid to rest eternally next to her beloved husband Henry at Rochester's IOOF Cemetery.
