Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Ruth Kerr, daugther of David and Emily Kerr, was born in Victor, Iowa, on Jan. 8, 1889. She was graduated from the public schools of Victor and furthered her education by attending Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Following her college studies she taught in the rural schools, and at Monticello, Waterloo, and here in Victor. She was united in marriage to the Reverend A. H. Barnes of Sikeston, Missouri on Oct. 12, 1918. To this union one daughter, Bette, was born. The young couple made their home in Sikeston until the death of Mr. Barnes a few years after their marriage. After the death of her husband the young wife and mother became president of Marvin College, a small Methodist school in Missouri. At a later time she returned to Victor and was united in marriage to S. L. Smith of Victor on Dec. 28, 1927. She had made her home in Victor since that time. Ruth was a member of the Methodist church of Victor for a number of years, also a member of the W.S.C.S. She was a charter member of the Victor Woman's Club and was affiliated with Victor Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, for many years. For ten years she served as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools, secretary to the Board of Education, and manager of the lunch program of the school. She was town assessor for 15 years. Her health had been failing for the past few months, and she passed away at her home shortly after midnight, Wednesday morning, July 18 at the age of 73 years, 6 months, and 10 days. She leaves to mourn her passing, one daugther, Bette Rieke of Victor, three grandchildren, Tom, Martha, and David Rieke; three step-children; James Smith of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Ruby Mohr of North English, and Mrs. Marjorie Satre of New York State; two sisters, Mrs. Flora Grant and Miss Mary Kerr of Victor, two brothers, Karl of Victor, and Harvey of West Liberty; and in addition other relatives and many friends. Her parents, three sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
