Hayes, 88, of Holy Cross, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, following a brief illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 p.m. She was born on May 2, 1920, in Bellevue, daughter of George and Rose (Michel) Feltes. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque, class of 1937. She married Louis P. Hayes on May 30, 1949, at Sacred Heart Church, Dubuque; he preceded her in death in 2005. During their marriage, Ruth and Louis traveled extensively, driving to all of the 48 continental states. Together they owned and operated the Holy Cross Locker until retirement in 1983. She continued to be active in the family business with her son, Bob. She was a wonderful cook and baker, especially known for her cinnamon rolls and roast beef. She was a very generous person who reached out to many people in their time of need. Ruth's family was the true focus of her life. She was very in tune with them and never lost her nurturing spirit, attending many of her children and grandchildren's events. Throughout her life, Ruth loved to read, especially later in life when she had more time. She was a member of the Holy Cross Parish and its Rosary Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 881, and the Immaculate Conception Alumni Association. Ruth received the honor of being the Holy Cross Citizen of the Year in 1995. Surviving are two sons, Bob (Sherry) Hayes, of Holy Cross, and Tim (Ann) Hayes, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Brian (Jen), Marty (Tonya), Mike (special friend, Katie Menke), Sarah and Lisa Hayes; a great-grandson, Henry Louis Hayes; a brother, Donald (Mary) Feltes; a sister, Betty Savary; three sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Feltes, Viola Avery and Joan Hayes; and a brother-in-law, John T. Corbett. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ivan, Lester and Eldred Feltes; a sister, Velma Corbett; and numerous brothers-and-sisters-in-law.
