Ruth was born on February 22, 1937, in rural Shell Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Detmer and Gladys (Courbat) Jacobs. She attended the Shell Rock School system until the 11th grade and then later obtained her general education degree. Ruth was born on February 22, 1937, in rural Shell Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Detmer and Gladys (Courbat) Jacobs. She attended the Shell Rock School system until the 11th grade and then later obtained her general education degree. On July 3, 1955, Ruth was united in marriage to Edwin Duane Ruth at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Iowa. The couple made their home in Shell Rock until 1965, when they bought their acreage near Western Douglas. In 2011, Ruth moved to the Ledges in Waverly. Early in life Ruth worked for Sears and Roebuck in Waverly and for a Drug Store in Waverly. She then started working as a clerk for the United States Post Office, working in Bremer, Fredericksburg, Nashua, and Waterloo until 1983 when she became Post Master in Plainfield. Ruth retired in 1997. Ruth was a member of the Home Arts Club in Shell Rock. Ruth enjoyed playing softball, snowmobiling, camping, traveling, hand stitching, and collecting bells and apples. Ruth was also a very social person and really enjoyed her visits with family and friends. Ruth's memory is honored by: her four children, Darwin (Terry) Ruth of Tripoli, Iowa, Randall (Diane) Ruth of Plainfield, Iowa, Jacqueline (Steven) Zars of Waverly, Iowa, and Rhonda Woodworth of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren, Ryan and Kiela; two great-grandchildren, Jayla and Nevaeh; a sister, Marlys (John) Bauler of Waterloo; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin, in March of 2003; a brother, James Jacobs; and two sisters, Deborah Jacobs and Betty Miller. According to her wishes, Ruth's body has been cremated, and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 18, 2017, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Alan Biere officiating. The family will greet friends from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
