Ruth was born July 12, 1917, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the eldest child and only daughter of Thomas H. Petersen and Anna M. Paulsen Petersen, followed by three brothers, Thomas, Donald and Richard. After graduating from Anthon High School, Ruth was educated at Wayne State College, Morningside College (BA, magna cum laude), the University of South Dakota (MA in English), and the University of Northern Iowa (Masters in library science). She dedicated herself to teaching in Iowa for 38 years. Before marriage to Ray R. Harbour in 1940, Ruth taught for seven years in western Iowa. In 1953 she returned to teaching, first the fifth grade and then high school English in Correctionville, where she was also librarian and coach of a speech and drama program that gained many I's at state level. From 1960 to 1963 she taught English, served as librarian and coached speech and drama in Holstein. She then moved to Cedar Rapids as a librarian/media specialist in middle schools, where she helped to develop the curriculum and a media program that became known nationwide. In 1973 she was named principal of Pierce School (the first woman principal in Cedar Rapids since World War II), where she remained until she retired in 1982. Ruth devoted many hours to PEO, Quota Club of Cedar Rapids, Leawood Women's Club, the Church of the resurrection of Leawood and the Leawood United Methodist Church, as well as to gardening and traveling. In 2003 she published Real Egg Coffee, a collection of recipes and reminiscences over the last century of cooking in the Midwest. She was preceded by her parents, brothers, Tom and Donald, and husband Ray. Survivors include a brother, Richard Petersen of Correctionville, Iowa; daughters Anne of London and Hereford, England; Janet of Oklahoma City; Laurel of Leawood; and Lea of Kansas City; and four grandchildren, Jason Bledsoe, Christina Buster, Alexis Crowley and Mathew Nolting. Ruth was fond of her sons-in-law Jack Regan, James Bledsoe, Craig Buster and James Ferguson.
