She attended public school in Appanoose County where she grew to womanhood. She moved with her family to a farm south of Exline in 1892. In addition to doing her share of the family work, she taught organ lessons for some time. She was united in marriage to Dan Friel at Exline on 14 Jul 1903 to which union were born four children. She spent her life in Appanoose County with the exception of about 25 years when the family resided in Rockford Illinois. The immediate family who survive are her husband, two sons, Enos Friel of Muskegan MI and Wdwin Friel of Rockford IL, two daughters, Ursal Boswell of Cincinnati and Mildred Robie of San Antonio TX. There are six grandsons, Terry and Larry Friel of Rockford IL, Bobbie Friel of Muskegan, MI, Hubert and Jimmie Robie of San Antonio TX, and Robert Boswell of Centerville; and two granddaughters, Mildred Reynolds of Des Moines and Margaret Robie of San Antonio. There are five great grandchildren, one grandson passing away in infancy. Three brothers also survive: CF Stevens of Denver CO, Orin Stevens of Cincinnati, and PR Stevens of Lincoln NE. Her parents, four brothers and one sister preceed her in death. Mrs Friel was baptized into Christ and became a member of the Exline Christian Church early in life. She took an active part in the life of the church and served it in various capacities, singing in the choir, and leading the congregational singing in the pre-organ days. During much of her life she worked outside of the home and these added duties prevented her from taking an active part in the life of the church during those years. During later years she took such active part as her health would permit. The last months of her life were spend in the home of her daughter, Mrs Cecil Boswell of Cincinnati. Mrs Friel, was a devoted wife and mother, the type of mother who knew how to live in the finest fellowship with her children. She sought neither wealth nor position for herself or her family. but found contentment in the common things of life. Hers was a sacrificial spirit and she was always willing to do more than her part in any fellowship. She requested that her burial be simple and inexpensive and suggested that since flowers could do her no good and would soon wither, such expressions of appreciation might be confined to a memorial gift for the church. This request, perhaps, as much as anything could, is typical of the life she lived. Funeral services were held at the Exline Church of Christ 7 Apr 1955 at 2 pm Brother James officiated using the 23rd Psalm which was chosen by Mrs Friel. Edna Musgrove accompanied by Nora Bratchi sang, "Will the Circle be Unbroken" and "Beyond the Sunset". Interment was in Exline Cemetery Contributor: jpaff (47876903) • [email protected]
