Friends and relatives wore shocked to learn by wire Sunday morning that Miss Sallie Slaven had been found dead in her bed at Oak Hill hospital, W. Va., were she was in training as a nurse, and from which institution she would have been graduated in May of this year. Miss Sallie was the youngest child of the late Henry A. Slaven who died some fifteen years ago, her mother who was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Otho Gum, having died previously, leaving a large family of children. Of these, the following still survive: Mrs. Blanch Pullin, of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Wm. White north of Monterey, Florence Slaven of Baltimore, Miss Alma, of Monterey, Roy Bernard of the Meadowdale community, and John, of Vanderpool. Miss Sallie was about 24 years of age, and before entering training at Oak Hill had taken a course at the University hospital where she was highly spoken of as a young lady. Two of her fellow-nurses. Misses Myers and Stephens accompanied the body to Highland, bringing with them a beautiful floral design, token of esteem by the hospital at Oak Hill. These young ladies stated that death was due to acute indigestion or heart trouble; that she had retired in her usual health at 9 o’clock on the previous night. They also spoke of her in highest praise, and of the attachments she had formed. Her death is peculiarly sad. Those familiar with her life—the handicaps of girlhood, the purpose and aspiration to fit herself for life and service, the thwarting of all aims and earthly hopes by being cut down in the bloom of young womanhood bow to submission, but in perplexity and wonder, awed by the inscrutable workings of Providence. The remains reached the home of her aunt, Mrs. Maud Gum at Meadow Dale Monday afternoon, and on Tuesday at 1 o’clock the funeral took place from the home, being conducted by Rev. Geo. L. Kerns of Monterey Presbyterian church. Interment was in the Wade cemetery near Mill Gap.
