Husband of Agnes Eliza "Eliza" Brown, married 04 Nov 1869 in Scotland County, Missouri. ~~~~~~~~ Aged Soldier and Citizen of Granger Passes Away Samuel Adams Hilliard was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania on November 24, 1839 and died at his home in Granger, Missouri, March 25, 1929, aged 89 years, 4 months, and 1 day. When a lad of eight he came with his parents to Van Buren County, Iowa, making the trip by boat and team. He grew to manhood here and on July 3, 1863, answered the call of his country and enlisted in Company E, 8th Regiment of Iowa Cavalry. Serving in this capacity for about eighteen months or until his regiment attempted to join General Sherman on his famous march to the sea and were captured by the enemy and taken to Andersonville prison. On the boat going home he met a cousin whom he did not know had entered the war, but who had been incarcerated in the same prison and released at the same time. The cousin died the night they reached home. Mr. Hilliard received an honorable discharge in due time. On November 4, 1869, he was united in marriage with Eliza Agnes Brown. To this union were born seven children, four sons and three daughters. For forty years they have lived in Clark and Scotland Counties, the last 17 years being spent in Granger. Farming was his occupation until the infirmities of old age incapacitated him. That he was loved and appreciated as a father was attested by the devotion of his children in his declining years, three of them remaining in the home to bring comfort and cheer to his weakening body and mind and the others lending assistance when possible. The testimony of those who have known him long is that he was an honorable citizen, a good neighbor, and a true friend. Firmly believing in the Golden Rule. He was preceded in death by his beloved companion in 1903. One son, Leander, in 1888, and one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Morris in 1905. He is survived by three sons, Sherman of Lacy, South Dakota; Merville Arnold and James Perry of Granger. Two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Ann Morris and Lizzie Belle of of Granger. Twelve grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. The funeral service was held in the Methodist Church in Granger at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, and was conducted by the Pastor R. W.
