Description	:	Samuel is the son of Henry Barnhouse and his first wife Anna Maria Baker of Hampshire County Virginia, and (later), of Monongalia County Virginia. ------------------------------------ Some of Samuel's eight siblings are: 1, Andrew Barnhouse. He married Elizabeth Ames. 2. Catherine Barnhouse. She married Judiah Higgins. 3. Elizabeth Barnhouse. She married Jacob B. Morgan. 4. Maria Barnhouse. She married Jonathan Arnett, and then Thomas Ward Demoss Evans. 5. Jane Barnhouse. Thanks, Nancy (Letcher) Heib. ----------------------------------- Samuel was born in Hampshire County Virginia on Dec. 9, 1801. ---------------------------------- Samuel was first married on Dec. 8, 1822 to Nancy A. Upton, in Monongalia County Virginia, solomized by Jacob Foreman. Nancy is the daughter of Samuel Upton Sr. and his wife Mary Ann Lanham. The bondsman for their marriage was Michael Kerns Jones, the husband of Nancy's sister Jemima. -------------------------------- Samuel and Nancy Barnhouse had five known children, all born in Monongalia County Virginia. (Note: This area later became part of Marion County, West Virginia). --- The children are listed on the memorial for his wife Nancy (Upton) Barnhouse. -------------------------------- Samuel and Nancy Barnhouse sold 120 acres of land on Dunkard Mill Run, in Marion County Virginia, in Sept. of 1842 (Deed Book 1, page 298). (Note: Monongalia County VA became part of Marion County VA in 1842). -------------------------------- Samuel Barnhouse and his family possibly came to Buchanan Township, Berrien County Michigan with (or shortly before), his sister Jane and her husband Ewell ("Uel") Dragoo, when they "returned" to Buchanan, Michigan in 1844-45. (Samuel's eldest child Jemima and her husband James Leggett possibly came with them). --- Note: There is a record of Samuel and Nancy Barnhouse's children attending the Mead school, North of Buchanan, starting in 1844. ----------------------------------- Samuel owned a farm North of Buchanan, Michigan, in Section 13 of Niles Township, Berrien County Michigan along the East side of the Saint Joseph River (on the North side of Buchanan). (His sister Jane and her husband Ewell Dragoo lived directly across the river, in Section 14 of Buchanan Township). --- Samuel and Nancy's children: Jane, Mariah, Eleanor, and William Harrison Barnhouse, are listed as attending the Mead School near the corner of Range Line and Geyer Roads (East of the St. Joseph River), in 1844, and 1845. William Harrison and Eleanor in 1848, and William Harrison Barnhouse, age 20, in 1860-1861. (Per: "Mead School Record Book", published in the "Friend's of Oak Ridge Cemetery" newsletter, in the January 2013 edition). ---------------------------------- After Samuel's first wife Nancy died on Jan. 14, 1866, Samuel married Mrs. Phoebe Graham (maiden name "Lewis"), on June 24, 1866 in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. (Samuel was age 64 and Phoebe was age 53). --- Note: Samuel's brother-in-law, Ewell Dragoo married for the second time, on June 23, 1872, in Buchanan, Michigan, to Mrs. Cornelia (Lewis) Graham (possibly Phoebe's sister?). ------------------------------ Samuel died in 1878, in Buchanan Township, Berrien County Michigan. He died at the age of 76 years, 7 months, and 24 or 25 days (per his headstone). (Note: Samuel's headstone could not be found again in 2012). ------------------------------- The "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, MI, dated Thurs. Aug. 8, 1878, page 3, column 1, states: ----- Mr. Samuel Barnhouse, one of the old settlers of this county, died at his home in "the bend of the river", last Sunday, aged 77 years. ------------------------------- Note: The "Bend of the River" is the area on the North and East side of the St. Joseph River, where the river bends, on the North side of Buchanan, Michigan. ------------------------------- Note: According to his short obituary, which states that Samuel died on the previous Sunday, Samuel would have died on Aug. 4th. (Samuel died on either Aug 3rd or Aug. 4th). ------------------------------ Note: Samuel's wife Nancy and their son William Harrison Barnhouse (who was an Officer in the Civil War, and who married Isabel Dragoo), and two of William's children are also buried in this cemetery. ------------------------------- Cemetery and headstone photos, courtesy of Spencer Miller. ------------------------------- Samuel's headstone could not be found, when this cemetery was "reconstructed" in 2012, so a small cross was made for him. -------------------------------- Note: There is a Mary Ann (Leeka-Miller) Barnhouse, who is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, Michigan, who was married to Samuel Barnhouse's first cousin William Barnhouse (b. 1827 or 1828 in Hampshire County Virginia). Samuel's cousin William Barnhouse and William's (second?) wife Mary Ann (Leeka-Miller) Barnhouse, had formerly lived in Grant County Indiana. ----------------------------- Note: See the memorials for members of Samuel's family, who are also buried in this cemetery: Sister, Jane (Barnhouse) Dragoo, of MI.
