Description	:	Nancy is the daughter of Samuel Upton Sr. (b. April 10, 1768), and his wife Mary Ann Lanham (b. April 13, 1773), of Prince George's County Maryland, and later of Monongalia County Virginia. Nancy's parents Samuel Upton Sr. and Mary Ann Lanham were married on April 4, 1790, in Prince George's County Maryland. --- The will for Nancy's father Samuel Upton Sr. was probated in Marion County Virginia in September 1845. His son Samuel Upton Jr. was named as the executor. Thanks, Nancy (Letcher) Heib. -------------------------------- Note: The Gilboa Cemetery, near Barrackville, in Monongalia County Virginia (now Marion County West Virginia), is located on property that was originally settled by Nancy's father Samuel Upton Sr. and Lindsey Boggess Sr. in 1810 and 1811. It was deeded on Feb. 15, 1859, by the later owners Lindsey Boggess Jr. and Elias Dudley, to the trustees of the Gilboa Meeting House (church), for use as a burying ground. The Gilboa Cemetery is located 3 miles North of Barrackville, W. VA (on C. R. 21), then one mile West on Gilboa Road (C. R. 21-1), to Gilboa Church Road (C. R. 24-3), just West of the right hand branch of Dunkard Mill Run. (Nancy's brother James Upton is buried there, along with other members of the Boggess, Dudley, Toothman, and Upton families). ------------------------------- Nancy was one of nine children: --- 1. Martha Ellen "Patsy" Upton. b. March 25 or 27, 1791, in Prince Georges County Maryland. m. (Rev.) William Stutler, on Jan. 10, 1811, in Monongalia Co. VA. d. Buried: Howard Chapel Cemetery, Vermillion County Indiana. (See her memorial, with her photo, on find-a-grave). --- 2. Jamima ("Jemima") Upton. b. March 5, 1793, in Prince Georges County Maryland. m. Michael Kern Jones, Aug. 14, 1814, in Monongalia County Virginia. (He was the "bondsman" for the marriage of Samuel Barnhouse and Nancy Upton). d. Feb. 10, 1859, in Tyler Co. W. VA. Buried: Beechwood Cemetery, Middlebourne, Tyler County West Virginia. --- 3. James Upton. b. Feb. 11, 1795, Prince Georges County Maryland. m. Rebecca Boggess, Oct. 31, 1816, in Monongalia County. They had nine children. d. June 10, 1868, aged 73 years, and 4 months, in Barrackville, Marion County Virginia (W. VA). Buried: Gilboa Cemetery, near Barrackville, Marion Co. West Virginia. --- 4. Elizabeth Upton. b. "about" 1798-99, in Virginia. m. William Hillery, April 16, 1818, in Monongalia County Virginia. Died: (before 1830) in Virginia. Buried: ? Virginia. Children: Eugenius Wilson McDougal (1823-1914). John Hillery McDougal (1824-1892). Samuel Upton McDougal (1828-1874). Francis Marion McDougal (1829-1860). Margaret McDougal (1829-1855). Note: This area later became part of Marion County Virginia, and then Marion County "West" Virginia. ------------------------------- Nancy was married on Dec. 8, 1822 to Samuel Barnhouse, in Monongalia County Virginia, solemnized by Jacob Foreman. Samuel is the son of Henry Barnhouse and his first wife Anna Maria Baker. The bondsman for Samuel and Nancy's marriage, was Michael Kerns Jones, the husband of Nancy's sister Jemima. ------------------------------- In September of 1842, Samuel and Nancy Barnhouse sold 120 acres on Dunkard Mill Run, near Barrackville, in Marion County (formerly Monongalia Co.), Virginia (Deed Book 1, page 298). -------------------------------- They came to Buchanan Township, Berrien County Michigan in 1844 (possibly with Samuel's sister Jane and her husband Ewell Dragoo, when they "returned" to Buchanan). ------------------------------ Samuel and Nancy Barnhouse had five known children, all born in Monongalia County Virginia: ----------------- 1. Jemima Barnhouse. b. Oct. 12, 1822 or 1823, in Monongalia Co. Virginia. m. James Nicholas Leggett, on Jan. 24, 1842 in Monongalia Co. VA. James is the son of John Leggett and his wife Catherina Barrick. They came to Michigan with her parents and her siblings, in 1844. 1850 census -Berrien County Michigan. 1860 census-Ritchie County W. Virginia. (Moved to Missouri after the Civil War). 1880 census - Cunningham, Chariton County Missouri. 1887 - She died in Linn Co. Missouri. Possible children are: Harriet, Elizabeth Malinda, Mary E., W. Franklin (he married Isabelle Parker), Julia Alice, and a son R. N. Leggett. Harriet Leggett is listed as attending the Mead School near Buchanan in 1848. (Julianna Alice was born 1855 in MI, and died Nov. 8, 1860, in Ritchie Co. West Virginia, at the age of 5). James was born on April 25, 1819, in Monongalia County Virginia, and he died on March 25, 1903, in St. Clair, Franklin County Missouri. He served in the Union Army in the Civil War. After Jemima's death, James was later married to Sarah Montgomery. d. Jemima died on Jan. 12, 1887, at the age of 64 years, and 3 months, in Linn County Missouri (per her find-a-grave memorial). Buried: Locust Creek Cemetery, Brookfield, Linn County Missouri. ------------------------------ 2. Jane Barnhouse. b. 1828, in Monongalia Co. Virginia. Jane is listed as attending the Mead School, on the N.-E. side of Buchanan, MI in 1844, and 1845. m. Ransom Dopp, on July 16, 1848, in Berrien County Michigan. Ransom is the son of John Dopp, and his wife Permelia Reynolds. Ransom was born Nov. 10, 1828, in Genesco, Livingston County New York. They had five children: William (Willie), Latecia/Lettitia (both died young), Louella, Augusta, and Ina B. Dopp (who married James D. Redding). (Augusta Dopp graduated from the Dowagic High School in 1876, and Ina Dopp in 1881). They lived in Wayne township, Cass county Michigan (Dowagic post office). They owned 1,400 acres, in sections 14 & 15, and 22 & 23. d. Sept. 5, 1914 in Benton Harbor, Berrien County Michigan. Buried: South Wayne Cemetery, in Dowagic, Cass County Michigan. (A large article on Ransom Dopp in the "History of Cass County Michigan", by Alfred Mathews, on page 332, with a picture of their home). (Google: "Michigan county histories"). ------------------------------- 3. Mariah Barnhouse. b. (about 1830-1835), in Monongalia County Virginia. Mariah is listed as attending the Mead school (N.-E. of Buchanan, MI), with her siblings in 1844, and again in 1845. Per: Transcription of the "Mead School Record Book", published in the "Friends of Oak Ridge Cemetery" newsletter, in Buchanan, Michigan (Jan. 2013 issue, Vol. VIII, No. 1). Note: She is not listed as living with her parents, in the 1850 census. (No record of marriage for her in Berrien County Michigan between 1845 and 1850. No death records available for that time period). Could she have died before 1850, and been buried in the "Virginian's Burying Ground" with her parents and brother, or was she possibly married in another county? ------------------------------- 4. Eleanor Ann Barnhouse. b. Jan. 7, 1838, on Buffalo Run, in Monongalia County Virginia. Eleanor is listed as attending the Mead school N.-E. of Buchanan, MI in 1844, 1845, and 1848. m. James Ingalls, on Oct. 29, 1853, in Berrien Co. MI. James was the son of Benjamin Ingalls and his wife Jane McCall. They had two children: Julia Alphonsine Ingalls (Feb. 16, 1855-Aug. 19, 1878), who married Alexander Watson, on March 24, 1875, in Berrien Co. MI. He was a farmer and stock breeder at Glenwood, MI., and Emerson Ingalls. d. Sept. 26, 1900, in Berrien Co. MI. (Note: James Ingalls was born on Sept. 27, 1827, and he died in 1909). James was a cooper, and later, a market gardner in Buchanan, Michigan. Buried: Eleanor and James are buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, Berrien Co. Michigan (in Section 20, lot 34). July 29, 1840 in Monongalia Co. VA. William is listed as attending the Mead School in 1844, 1845, 1848, and at age 20, in 1860-61. m. Sunday, April 9, 1865, in Buchanan Twp. Berrien Co. Michigan, to Isabel Dragoo, the daughter of John Fleming Dragoo Sr. and his wife Barbara Anne Level (at the bride's mother's home). He owned a farm in Section 15 of Buchanan Township. d.
