As a young lad Samuel was “bound out” as an apprentice to tobacconists John Ferguson and Sons of Newport to learn the trade. However, according to Newport Town Council records Samuel’s mother Mary “Polly” Murphy Billings later spoke to the council because the young Fergusons had left the state and the old gentleman Ferguson “knew nothing about the business.” Apparently, the council concurred because on 23 May 1814, Samuel was discharged from the apprenticeship.
