Description	:	Samuel C. Davis was born in Columbianna County, Ohio, May 11, 1828. Moved with his parents to Ashland County, Ohio, when 2 years old, where he grew to manhood. Was married to Lorella Grub March 2, 1852. Soon after he made the overland trip to California, where he remained two and one-half years. In the spring of 1855 he moved to McDonough County, Ill. Davis was born in Columbianna County, Ohio, May 11, 1828. Moved with his parents to Ashland County, Ohio, when 2 years old, where he grew to manhood. Was married to Lorella Grub March 2, 1852. Soon after he made the overland trip to California, where he remained two and one-half years. In the spring of 1855 he moved to McDonough County, Ill. In 1858 he made a trip to Montana, mining near Helena for one and one-half years. His next change of location was to Hiawatha in 1882, where he spent his declining years. He was a tailor by trade, but owing to rheumatic trouble he was never able to follow this business, but farmed and handled stock for a number of years. Three children were born to them, a son dying in infancy. Two daughters grew to womanhood. Ida, who married A. Slocum, died April 8, 1887, in Hiawatha in her 32nd year. May, the wife of L. Hermon, lives on the farm south of the city. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and two grandchildren. He was the son of Amos and Nancy Davis, being the second son in a family of 9 children, seven brothers and two sisters. His oldest brother, Robert, died in 1894. Mrs. Marie Chandler, Mrs. Mary Jane Johnson and Eli, living here; Wm. P. of Galesburg, Ill.; James A. of Dunavant, Kan; and JP of Topeka, who were all present at the funeral. He was one of the charter members and a director of the Kansas Mutual Insurance Company.
