Description	:	Samuel C. Thomas was born in 1819 in Northumberland Co., Pa. He came to Iowa at an early age possibly as early as 1837. The 1850 Federal Census finds him living in Camanche, Clinton Co., Ia. age 30 with brother Andrew age 20, both working as joiners. By 1856 he is living in Allamakee Co. working as a carpenter. Samuel enlisted July 1,1861 at Waukon, Ia. as a 42 yr. old resident of Volney, Ia. in Co. K, 5th Iowa Infantry. On July 25,1862 while at Camp Clear Creek, Tishomingo Co., Ms., Sam received from the Q.M. Dept. - 1 unlined blouse, 1... Read More	Samuel C. Thomas was born in 1819 in Northumberland Co., Pa. By 1856 he is living in Allamakee Co. working as a carpenter. Samuel enlisted July 1,1861 at Waukon, Ia. as a 42 yr. old resident of Volney, Ia. in Co. K, 5th Iowa Infantry. On July 25,1862 while at Camp Clear Creek, Tishomingo Co., Ms., Sam received from the Q.M. Dept. - 1 unlined blouse, 1 pair Inf. pants, 2 shirts and 2 pair of woolen socks. He is listed as absent since Nov.1,1862 at smallpox hospital at St. Louis, Mo. on Co. returns dated Oct.31, Nov.30, 1863 and May 30,1864. He was discharged July 17,1864 at Davenport, Ia. at the expiration of his term of service. He filed for an invalid pension on July 30,1879 and received pension certificate # 452.888. The roster for the 1887 reunion of the 5th Iowa Veterans association lists him as living at Evansburg, Pa. He applied for admittance to the Iowa Soldier's Home at Marshalltown on April 25,1889, listing his age as 70, residence Crawford Co., Pa. and next of kin being a brother, William Thomas, living at Meadville, Pa. Samuel C. Thomas died at the Soldier's Home on Jan.25,1892 and was buried in the Home's Cemetery. His belongings were sent to his brother in Pa. and consisted of; one draft of $130.33, a certificate of deposit for $750.00 on the bank in Meadville, Pa., a trunk and valise containing two watches and chains, pension papers and discharge, clothing and other personal property.
