Read More	Samuel Crampton Thomas, one of eleven children, was born on November 7th, 1846, at Salem, Henry County, Iowa. He departed this life on April 1st, 1920, having suffered on the day before, March 31st, a paralytic stroke while on the farm of his son, L.B. Thomas, near Marion, Nebraska, with whom he had been visiting, also with several other children at McCook. His going was without visible pain or suffering, and he did not regain consciousness during the last 15hours of his life. His wife and four sons were with him when the end came. Mr. Thomas had attained to the age of 73 years, 4 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn his sudden departure, his wife and nine children: Mrs. C.S. Watson of Ord, C.A. Thomas of Valentine, L.B. Thomas of Marion, M.J. Thomas of McCook, R.A. Thomas of Denver, Colorado, Leota Thomas of Henderson, Hugh of Holdrege, Phillip of McCook and Charles of Otis, Colorado. In the death of the husband and father was made the first break in the family circle. He also leaves behind a brother, L.B. Thomas, and a sister, Mrs. A.K. Wright of California; three sisters, Misses Eva, India and Dora of Colorado; and a fifth sister, Mrs. D.W. Clark, of University Place, Nebraska. There are seventeen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The first eight years of his life were spent at the place of his birth. There after, the family moved to Clark county, Iowa, where for ten years, young Samuel shared the family hardships of frontier life. The Civil War had been going on for three years, and the lad of seventeen made a number of unsuccessful attempts to enter the Union ranks. Finally, February 5, 1864, he enlisted as a private in Company I, 15th, Regiment, Iowa Infantry. On July 22nd, 1864, he was taken prisoner by the Confederate forces and sent to Andersonville prison. After six months imprisonment, he was exchanged on account of sickness and sent home. After regaining a measure of health and strength, he re-entered the service and marched with General Sherman to the sea. He was discharged from the service at the close of the war, July 24th, 1865, having seen a little less than eighteen months service. After a short time at home, he hired out as a teamster to drive across the plains to Salt Lake City. For seven years he roamed the plains and the states of Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Montana. Returning to the old home in June of 1872, he there met Mary Ann Clark, with whom he was united in marriage October 31st, 1872. February 24th, 1874, they moved, with their baby girl to Burr Oak, Kansas, traveling in a prairie schooner. Here they took up a homestead. Their twelve years here were full of struggle of those early days. Sowing faithfully, the harvest was all too frequently one of blasted hopes, following hot winds, grasshoppers, drought and sickness. They then moved with their family of five children onto school land near Elwood, Nebraska. It was not the end of their hardships however, and four successive crop failures added discouragement to the disappointment. However, they continued to live here for eighteen years. Thirty-one years ago, Mr. Thomas made public confession of the Christian faith and with wife, united with the Christian church. During all these years he endeavored to live simply and sincerely the Christian Life. When in the year 1903 they moved to Fairmont, they continued their Christian Fellowship and Faith by uniting with the Congregational church, of which Mr. Thomas continued an interested and faith member until his death tho he was often denied the privilege of attendance upon the public service on account of illness. On his sixtieth birthday he sustained a severe bodily injury while carpentering. Later he received a sunstroke and for the last thirteen years of his life, he was more or less of an invalid. For the last several years his invalidism had been practically complete. These wee years of severe testing to his spirit in view of the always active life which he had lived and in view of the fond expectation of a peaceful, active old age. But his was the true soldier's spirit, and all his years of hardship, struggle and disappointment did not make him bitter. His habitual, characteristic mood was one of cheerfulness while he had a friendly greeting and smile for all whom he met. For all this, he will be greatly missed by his fellow citizens. He served for several years as Commander of the Grand Army Post at Elwood, Nebraska, and one year of the Fairmont Post, among other offices. He had a lively interest in Grand Army affairs and during frequent periods in which he was bedfast, he greatly enjoyed the visits of his comrades. Something of the old time spirit of loyalty and patriotic emotion for country and humanity's cause often stirred in his breast and brought telling words to his lips during the recent World War. He was proud and happy to have three boys and a son-in-law "carry on" in the spirit of sixty-one and sixty-five. Mr. Thomas had another fine loyalty. We refer to his constant devotion and abiding loyalty to the wife of his youth, the companion of his years of struggle, the tender guardian of his years of invalidism. It was for this companionship that he wanted most to live and to break which it was his one regret in going. But the ground upon which we now stand is too holy a ground the story too sacred for any to proceed further save to say, that if in life anything is needed beyond the revealing love of Christ, the Master, to compel belief in a great, good and loving God to whom all true, loving souls shall come at last, it may be found, methinks in the oneness, in the mutual esteem and tender love of such who, like these have grown old together. True soldier, worthy pioneer, simple Christian, kindly friend and loyal lover, we would join his comrades today in placing upon his breast the token of loyalty and service. Funeral services were held at the home in Fairmont and were conducted by the minister of the Congregational church, Rev. W. B. Kline. The six sons acted as pallbearers.
