Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Sam was born on 9/6/1921 in Antrim county, Ireland to Samuel and Hannah (Carlton) Lyle (deceased). At 6 months of age Sam crossed the North Atlantic Ocean with his mother to Canada, where his father was waiting for them. The family moved to Iowa two years later. Sam graduated from Laurel High School in 1941 and was employed at Fisher Governor Company in Marshalltown. He married Doris (Sally) Blum on February 3, 1942 in Lancaster, Missouri. Sam was drafted into the service and left for Fort Des Moines on November 14, 1942. Following his induction he was sent to Salt Lake City and Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado for training in the Air Corps. He received his aerial gunnery training at Pyote and Dalhart, Texas and also at Kingman Field Arizona and graduated from gunnery school in April of 1943 as a Staff Sergeant. Trained as a ball turrett gunner on a B17 with the Fifteenth Air Force, Sam was sent to Grand Island, Nebraska to fly overseas. Because his plane had already departed, he was then sent to Virginia and left on the largest Navy convoy of the war. He arrived in Casablanca, North Africa and flew to Tunis, Africa. Where he participated in the European Theater of Operation on October 12, 1943, assigned to the 416th Bomb Squadron, Sam flew missions out of Africa to France, Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia and Greece. On December 22, 1943 Sam was stationed in Italy and continued these missions. On February 22, 1944 Sam's plane was shot down over southern Germany and he parachuted down into a forest, landing in a tree. Germans apprehended him and he became a prisoner of war for fourteen months. All of his crew also parachuted down safely. He was taken first to the Gestapo Headquarters and then held at Stalag Luft IV in northern Germany until being taken by train and boat to Stalag Luft VI where he spent the rest of his time. Later as the allies pushed further into Germany, Sam's camp was marched inland. After marching for at least a month, Sam took off on his own. Seeking refuge in a farmer's barn on the edge of a small town, he slept and nourished himself with the milk he took from the farmer's cow. After hiding out for several days, the English Army arrived. Sam made himself known, and was taken to an airbase where he got his first shower in months, received new clothes and food. The next day he was flown to Brussels, Belgium and then onto London in an English bomber. He received hospital care in Oxford, England. He was in London on D. Day. He was then sent to South Hampton and traveled by ship to the United States. Sam arrived home in the latter part of June of 1945. In August he was sent with his wife to Miami, Florida for a two weeks vacation. On October 7, 1945 Sam was honorably discharged from the Army at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. On October 7th, 1948 Sam was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force Reserve. Sam received several awards for his military service, the most distinguished being The Purple Heart. His other awards included the Air Medal with 1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Prisoner of War Medal, W.W. II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bonze Service Stars, American Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal and W.W. II Honorable Service Lapel Button. After returning home Sam owned a truck for hauling lime and gravel and started his own tiling business. He farmed in Minnesota, as well as locally. In 1964 he began working for Lennox Industries. After 23 years Sam retired as a Factory Supervisor in 1987. Sam was an avid sportsman, card player, gardener and he loved to dance. While at Lennox he and other Lennox employees enjoyed trap shooting and were in both National and State meets. In 1969 Sam won the Iowa State Diamond Badge Award for trap shooting. He loved to fish for salmon, lake trout, walleyes and northerners and hunt pheasants, duck, deer, fox and coyotes. He owned several boats and spent lots of retirement time fishing in Minnesota and on Lake Michigan out of Port Washington Harbor, Wisconsin. He also traveled to Texas often to see his daughter (LuAnn) and son-in-law (that big guy, Rodney) and to Michigan to see his son (Randy) and grandchildren (Nicole and Trevor). In March of 2007 he moved to Brenham, Texas to live with his daughter due to declining health. He was a 64 year member in 2009 of the American Legion (Laurel Unit) and 40 & 8 of Marshalltown. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Doris (Sally) Lyle, Brenham, TX, his son Randy H. (Fiancée, Terry Wolf) Kenosha, Wisc., daughter LuAnn K. (Rodney) Hibbs, Brenham, TX and Grandchildren: Nicole L. Lyle, Ludington, Mich. and Trevor D. Lyle, Kaleva, Mich, as well as his devoted Dalmatian Grand-Dog, "Samantha Kay." Brother: William James (Shorty) Lyle, Marshalltown, Sister-in-laws: Evelyn Blum, Haverhill/Solon, IA, Mildred Blum, Newton, IA, 8 Nieces and 4 Nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his parents (Samuel 1925, Hannah 1948), step-father (Fred Fehrmann 1951), a daughter Eleanor Kay (infant 11/30/1956), 3 brothers-in-laws Short (Morris), Toad (Lyle) and Jim (Max) Blum, 2 sister–in-laws (Sara Blum and Beulah Blum), 3 step brothers (Henry, Carl and Earl Fehrmann) and 1 step sister (Mabel Shill).
