Kinert, one of the very early settlers in Valley township, near Rago, died Saturday evening, April 28, 1917, on the farm where he had resided for about thirty-three years. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church (sic), at Rago, Monday the 30th, and interment was in Walnut Hill Cemetery at Kingman. In the passing of Mr. Kinert Kingman county (sic) lost one of its best citizens and a man who bore the respect of every one who knew him. He was prominent in public and municipal affairs, generally and in his political belief he was noted for his candor and for his firm and steadfast allegiance to the Republican party; and a man who despised deceit and shams of every character, and dared at all times to assert his views, whenever occasion arose; and on account of his frank and blunt way of expressing himself he was admired by those who might chance to disagree with him in religious or political views. He was a valued man in the community and will be greatly missed. Samuel Franklin Kinert, the subject of this sketch was born in Cumberland county (sic), Pennsylvania, January 19, 1841, hence was past 76 years of age at the time of his death. In the Civil War he was a soldier on the Union side, serving as private in Company C, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry, having enlisted at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania on November 1, 1862. On the 10th day of February, 1870, he was united in marriage with Anna M. Duey, in Pennsylvania, and three weeks later they came west and settled at Macon, Illinois, where they resided for eight years, when they came to Kansas, where they continued to reside for some six years, when they came to Kingman county (sic), settling in Valley township, on the farm, where his death occurred. To Mr. and Mrs. Kinert three children were born, one, a son, dying at the age of six years. In religious belief deceased was a Dunkard, having become a member of the Brethren church (sic) in 1883, and he remained steadfast and faithful to the tenets of that organization until death. The surviving relatives are his aged wife and companion of 47 years, a daughter, Mrs. G.S. Pulliam and his son John X. Kinert. To these and other sorrowing friends The Leader-Courier extends words of sympathy. The Leader-Courier, date unknown =============================== S.F. Kinert passed away at his home in Valley township Saturday evening at 8:30. He had suffered for ten years from kidney trouble and had failed rapidly the last year. Six weeks before his death he was confined to his bed and the end had been expected hourly. His wife and children were constantly in attendance during his last days. The funeral was conducted from the Rago Methodist church (sic) at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in charge of H.B. Martin of the Darlow Brethren church (sic). Interment took place at Walnut Hill. Mr. Kinert died at the home where he had resided for thirty three years. He was an old soldier and was a member of the Harper G.A.R. Post. In July 1913, he in company with the late "Uncle Rube" Richardson, attended the National G.A.R. Encampment on the field of Gettysburg. He always took an active part in all G.A.R. celebrations. Samuel Frank Kinert was born in Cumberland County, Pa., on January 19, 1841 amd was therefore 76 years, 3 months and 9 days old. During the Civil War he enlisted at Chambersburg, Pa., on November 1, 1862 and served his country until September 1863. He was a member of Company C of the 158 Pa. Infantry. After being mustered out of service he went to Texas where he spent several years on the range as a cowboy. His thrilling experiences during those years were often related to the younger generation and were greatly enjoyed by them. When he left the range and took up life in a milder country he never entirely gave up his cowboy customs of dress. He always wore boots and although prosperity had smiled graciously upon him he always maintained the same humble attitude, and felt more at home in his boots. A man with a bigger heart never lived in this county nor have there been many who have had more friends. Upon returning home he was united in marriage to Miss Anna M. Duey on February 10, 1870. Shortly after their marriage they went to Macon, Ill., where they resided 8 years. Three children were born to them. The youngest son, William, died at the age of 6 years. The others, Mrs. Nellie Pulliam of White township and John X. Kinert of Rago survive to comfort the aged mother in her grief. Mr. and Mrs. Kinert moved to Kansas in 1878 first settling in Sedgwick county (sic) but six years later came to Valley township where they purchased land and have since resided. His last wish for his wife was that she purchase a little house in Kingman that she might be near her church. He united with the Brethren Church at Conway Springs in 1883 and lived a consistent Christian life. His wife, his children and grandchildren are not alone in their grief for the entire community in which he has lived so long feel a great loss in the passing of their old neighbor and friend, for he was held in high esteem by all both old and young.
